Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are still the top two drivers in the F1 table, but the McLaren duo’s position seem far from secure after Max Verstappen narrowed the gap even further.
The Dutchman made no mistake from pole, leading every lap on his way to victory, as Norris and Charles Leclerc followed him to the finish line.
With that result, Verstappen slashed what was once a triple-digit deficit to just 40 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri — his biggest stride yet in the push for a fifth consecutive crown.
Can McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris Protect Their F1 Lead?
Verstappen sent a clear warning to McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris by closing the gap in the championship with a strong showing at the US GP.
It was business as usual for the Red Bull man, who grabbed every point on offer in Austin to rack up his third win in five Grands Prix and fifth of the year.
For weeks, Verstappen downplayed any chatter of a title fight. But after conquering the United States Grand Prix, even he had to admit that a fifth straight world crown is firmly on the horizon.
“Yeah, for sure. The chance is there,” he said after finishing seven seconds ahead of Norris at the Circuit of Americas, with Piastri coming in at P5. “We just need to try and deliver this kind of weekends now ’til the end.”
“We will just try whatever we can. I think it is exciting, and I’m just very excited to the end. It was an unbelievable weekend for us,” he continued.
With Red Bull firing back into form and McLaren losing momentum, Verstappen has re-emerged as the man to beat, shaving another 23 points from Piastri’s advantage at the US Grand Prix.
McLaren’s fairy-tale season is starting to lose its shine. Piastri’s once commendable lead is shrinking fast, and his teammate Norris now stands only 14 points away in the standings.
After just one top-four result in his past three races, Piastri’s form has dipped, and his fifth-place finish in Austin handed Verstappen a fresh lifeline in the title fight.
Team principal Andrea Stella insists that McLaren will continue to give both drivers equal opportunities, but speculation about prioritising Piastri is growing louder as Verstappen closes in.
With Red Bull back to peak form, McLaren’s cautious approach could prove costly if internal rivalry distracts them in the season’s final run.
Five races and two sprint weekends stand between the teams and the championship, with 141 points still in play.
Every pit stop, strategy call, and qualifying lap will matter, and if Verstappen maintains his form, McLaren’s split-focus approach might not withstand Red Bull’s unified push.
