NASCAR World Reacts to Ty Gibbs’ Bristol Win: “First of Many”

Ty Gibbs secures his first career Cup Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway, earning praise from rivals Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson.

Ty Gibbs’ first Cup Series win was inevitable. Going into the 2026 Food City 400, the No. 54 Toyota was looking like one of the favorites to get a result at Bristol Motor Speedway, simply because of its consistency this year. The 23-year-old hadn’t finished lower than sixth since the second race of the season at EchoPark Speedway, and that kind of momentum can make a big difference.

Ultimately, he held off Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney in overtime to get the result, despite being on worn-out tires. Amidst the celebrations, the NASCAR world reacted to Gibbs’ moment, with his rivals sharing some heartfelt messages in post-race interviews.

Ty Gibbs’ First Win Gets Plaudits From the NASCAR Community

Gibbs raced like a man on a mission at Bristol Motor Speedway. Despite being only 23-years-old, he showed great composure after a restart with 15 laps to go, even though Blaney and Larson were hot on his heels on fresher tires. Then, the caution flag flew with four laps left, which resulted in the first overtime period at Bristol since 2015.

What followed was pure drama. Blaney and Gibbs went wheel-to-wheel in OT, with the Team Penske driver battling the No. 54 on the inside. And what followed was the closest finish at ‘The Last Great Colosseum’ since 1991. Joe Gibbs’ grandson secured the win with the narrowest of margins, finishing 0.055 seconds ahead of the No. 12 Ford.

What followed were plaudits across the garage.

Blaney, who was heartbroken after the checkered flag was waved, couldn’t have been more gracious. He said, “Even though I’m bummed we didn’t win the race, I’m happy that Ty (Gibbs) was able to get his first one because I remember what that was like. I remember the elation and the joy, especially when you’ve come close a handful of times, which he has.”

He wasn’t the only one. Gibbs’ teammate, Chase Briscoe, went on to say, “Super awesome day for him. The whole family, right? But to do it the way he did it, on old tires, against Blaney and Larson, who were really the dominant cars all day long. Super, super, happy for him. The first of many.”

Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick, who finished fourth, also gave credit where it was due. He said, “It was a lot of fun. Happy for him and the 54 team. We just fought hard all day long, it was really cool to have a shot at it in the end there.”

Even NASCAR veteran Denny Hamlin, who finished ninth at Bristol Motor Speedway, went over to congratulate Gibbs after the race ended. The two exchanged handshakes and smiles, as seen in the in-car camera.

As for Kyle Larson, the Hendrick Motorsports driver shared his analysis of what went wrong after the race. Reflecting on the result, he said, “Ty got strong there, in the last run. That was probably my worst run, I think. We were making some adjustments at that point, and I just got a little bit out of the track. They were just better than me.”

In the end, Gibbs led just 25 laps at Bristol Motor Speedway, inheriting the first place under caution after Tyler Allen gambled with the strategy to keep him on track, while Blaney and Larson pitted. With this result, the 23-year-old became the sixth NASCAR driver to earn his first Cup victory at Bristol, joining the likes of Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Ernie Irvan, Elliott Sadler, and Kurt Busch.

The next Cup Series race will be held on April 19 at Kansas Speedway. As things stand, Hendrick Motorsports has won three of the past four races at the venue, with Larson and Chase Elliott winning the race last year. However, considering Gibbs’ latest race win and consistency, it’s well within the realm of possibility that he could continue his winning streak.
