Team Penske’s Reign Crumbles as Joey Logano’s Championship Hopes Shatter at Martinsville

Team Penske’s Next-Gen dominance and Joey Logano's reign crumble as William Byron leads Chevrolet into a showdown with Toyota.

The streak is finally over. The championship showdown at Phoenix Raceway will now come down to Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports. At Martinsville, 27-year-old William Byron delivered an epic, exhilarating finish that crushed Team Penske’s hopes, ending Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney’s bid for the gold. Just like that, the defending champion is out of the fight, a stunning blow to an organization that had unapologetically dominated the Next-Gen era.

What Is Next for Team Penske and Reigning NCS Champion Joey Logano?

2025 NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season champion Byron brutally rewrote the narrative from previous years, denying the top-running Fords an entry into the upcoming finale. In a must-win showdown, the No. 24 driver muscled past Blaney (the current best at Martinsville in the current Cup roster) to seize the lead but never returned it.

Byron’s defiance stifled Penske’s charge. After three dominant years with the Next-Gen car, Team Penske’s championship streak has officially ended. Both Logano and his No. 12 teammate went into the cutoff race with a 30-plus-point deficit (Logano: 38 and Blaney: 47), meaning a win was the only favorable result that could keep the organization’s hopes afloat.

Neither Logano’s solid eighth-place effort nor Blaney’s valiant second could save Penske’s season, resulting in a new order: Ford will have no presence in the Championship 4 for the first time in the Next-Gen era.

After three consecutive titles (two from Logano – 2022 and 2024; one from Blaney – 2023), the Ford-backed organization ruled NCS with an iron fist. This season looked no different; their strength was undiminished. Yet, the empire finally cracked, leaving Penske and his team staring down, heartbroken.

“Ultimately… We didn’t have enough to capitalize today at Martinsville,” wrote the defending champion, taking it on the chin like the champ he is; the loss may sting, but he remains unbroken. “P8 Finish. I’m bummed the back-to-back title run for a 4th Championship won’t happen this year, but we’d still like to end the season on a high note with a W in Phoenix next week. One more to go in 2025, and you know we’ll be locked in to be a threat in 2026!”

The championship fight now comes down to Chevrolet versus Toyota, with 2021 Cup Series champion Kyle Larson and his teammate Byron carrying the flag for Chevy, while Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe represent the Japanese powerhouse.

For Team Penske, this year’s setback certainly won’t be the defining chapter. If history is any indication, the powerhouse will come roaring back, and 2026 could easily see one, if not both, of its Fords back in the championship hunt.
