The future of Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, long considered a crown jewel of the city’s racing scene, faces fresh uncertainty after a recent poll and ongoing legal battles threw a wrench into redevelopment plans. NASCAR fans and local residents alike are now questioning whether the historic track will continue to host races or be replaced entirely.
Polls Signal Trouble for Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway
Last week, a Vanderbilt University poll revealed that 36% of Nashville residents support eliminating the speedway, compared to just 26% who favor a plan to improve the facility and bring NASCAR back to the city.
The findings follow similar results from the Power Poll, which surveys civic leaders and influencers, showing that 55% oppose a potential racetrack investment plan. While past votes in 2011 overwhelmingly supported preserving the track, the current political climate appears far less favorable.
At the center of the controversy is a proposed redevelopment plan with Speedway Motorsports, which would see the company lease and operate the Fairgrounds, finance renovations, and take on operating and maintenance responsibilities. The plan, first announced in 2021, has stalled publicly in recent years despite indications that agreements were near finalization.

Supporters argue the project would protect a historic racing venue, preserve local jobs, and bring NASCAR back to Nashville. However, opponents want the property replaced with affordable housing and park space. Adding another layer of complication, a group pushing to eliminate racing as a protected activity at the Fairgrounds was recently granted approval to gather the 50,000 signatures required to place the question on the ballot this November.
That effort has been halted temporarily due to a lawsuit filed by former racer Neil Chaffin, which is still pending in Davidson County Chancery Court. The hearing for the case is expected soon. If the anti-racing measure survives, organizers will have just under three months to collect signatures, leaving little time to mobilize support.

Despite the political and legal turmoil, racing at the Fairgrounds has continued, with preparations underway for the 2026 season. Practice sessions earlier this year drew enthusiastic crowds, and opening night featured 134 race participants and a large crowd of fans.

NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is also scheduled to race at the track for the first time since 1999 on April 11 as part of the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Tour, bringing excitement and attention to the historic venue.

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 386 has voiced support for redevelopment while opposing the ballot measure, emphasizing the need to protect local jobs and public assets. Union representatives were present during practice sessions and opening night, signaling strong local backing for the track’s preservation.
For now, the future of the iconic half-mile oval is anything but certain. With redevelopment plans stalled, court battles ongoing, and the community split on the track’s fate, the iconic venue hangs in the balance.
