NASCAR’s Chase Comeback Has Dale Earnhardt Jr. Recalling the Moment He Nearly Gave Up

NASCAR may have returned to the traditional chase format, but there once was a time when Dale Earnhardt Jr, had lost all hope of convincing the officials for the same.

After more than a decade of the elimination-style playoff system, NASCAR is heading for a change in the way it decides its champion. And, instead of looking ahead, the sport has decided to take inspiration from its past, opting for a 10-race chase system after the regular season. The iconic Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of the many faces on the playoff committee, which was responsible for finalizing the structure for the 2026 season.

And while Mark Martin continued with an almighty push to make sure that the chase format returned, Earnhardt recently revealed that he had quickly given up on any hope for the same.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Recalls a Grim First Meeting of the NASCAR Playoff Committee in 2025

Ever since Joey Logano was crowned champion of the 2024 Cup Series, fans have been at a crossroads with NASCAR, owing to the credibility of the playoff format structure. Last year, the argument around the same reached an all-time high as Denny Hamlin lost out on the championship in heartbreaking fashion, right at the end of the race in Phoenix.

The JGR driver had the championship in the palm of his hand before a late caution changed everything, leading to Kyle Larson becoming champion.

Ever since, everyone knew that a change would be coming to the structure of the sport as we know it, but it kept getting delayed, thanks to the charter lawsuit. But now that that’s settled, the championship-deciding structure has also been revamped, with fans and insiders getting what they wanted.

However, there once was a time that Earnhardt didn’t see a chase format within the realm of possibility, as he recalled in the most recent episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast.

A member of the playoff committee alongside network officials, NASCAR brass, ex-drivers, and current drivers, Earnhardt had excitedly agreed to become a part of the committee. However, when he went to the first meeting at the 2025 Daytona 500, the scene he saw nearly made him throw in the towel.

With a plethora of officials sitting in front of him, Earnhardt felt that there was no way of convincing them to move away from the playoff format.

“I looked across the room and I’m like ‘I can’t convince the networks to let go of what they want to hang on to. I don’t think I can convince NASCAR to go as far as they need to go.”

Earnhardt added that once the conversations began, drivers such as Christopher Bell were brutally honest with what they wanted, painting a clear picture in front of the officials.

Moreover, Martin was relentless in his pursuit of the chase format, and he “never let off the gas.” Earnhardt added that had Martin not been as adamant as he was, the chase format might never have happened.

While Martin played a key role in the return of the chase format, an argument can also be made about the charter lawsuit settlement steering the argument in their favor. NASCAR had come under immense pressure following the settlement, and major changes were implemented across the organization.

Therefore, it is likely that the settlement also helped Martin and Co. in their mission after Earnhardt had lost all hope.
