Mamba Smith Stirs the Pot in Playoff Debate

FOX Sports ally and NASCAR’s official hype officer, Smith, just poked the hornet’s nest with his latest remark on the sport’s controversial playoff format. For a long time, the sanctioning body has been under scrutiny for its post-regular season layout, with Denny Hamlin strongly vouching for the inclusion of a championship round to determine the final winner.

Despite the efforts, NASCAR is yet to budge. Recently, during one of his online debates, Smith argued that the very purpose of the present style is to filter out the best team, not just the top driver. He noted, “The point isn’t to crown the best driver… It’s to crown the best team who executed the best when the pressure was at its highest and the lights were the brightest.”

He was responding to a fan query on X, but his surprising take got the attention of the NASCAR garage, including Denny Hamlin. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was spot on with his response. Choosing not to drag the argument into a petty squabble, Hamlin used his trademark sarcasm to stop Smith’s rant.

That didn’t quite end the bombardment. While fans and traditionalists poured in to bash Smith, prominent podcaster and Kaulig Racing spotter Brett Griffin of “Door Bumper Clear” chimed in with his number.

Fanning the flame, Griffin mocked, “I just want him to get to 1 million impressions even though this is a shit take by someone on the nascar payroll. Love you man.”

For the unversed, the current format stipulates that playoff drivers pass through a series of elimination rounds until only four remain. Those finalists will then face off in a winner-takes-all championship race. While the system creates drama, it often undervalues season-long consistency, sometimes shutting out deserving contenders, with Denny Hamlin being a prime example.

Irrespective of the fallout, one thing is certain: NASCAR’s current playoff format isn’t just shaping champions, it’s fueling one of the sport’s hottest debates.
