Ford Confirms New Mustang Will Power Its Next NASCAR Era

Rushbrook made the big announcement after 2023 champion Ryan Blaney drove out the new Mustang Dark Horse SC. Ford teams will debut the Mustang Dark Horse SC at the 2027 Daytona 500 as they chase wins and playoff spots.

“I am excited to announce tonight that we will, in 2027, we will take the Dark Horse SC and debut it at America’s race track with America’s race team, the Daytona 500,” Rushbrook said.

Ford is debuting a new Mustang for the third time in the Gen 7 era. After rolling out a new model in 2022, the manufacturer moved to the Dark Horse in 2024 and 2025. Joey Logano won his third Cup Series championship in 2024, driving a Dark Horse.

Ford builds on lessons learned from two years of racing with the Dark Horse platform to introduce the latest evolution of the Mustang race car.

“You’re always looking at competition reasons when you update these cars. Yes, it has to be relevant and the most recent for marketing reasons, but it’s also an opportunity based on everything that you’ve learned to redo the aerodynamics on the car, and that certainly is part of what we’ve done here,” Rushbrook explained earlier.

The development process required close collaboration between Ford’s design studio and its racing aerodynamics team to balance visual authenticity with on-track performance.

“It’s not just a studio styling exercise. It was a very intense process with the studio part of it to make sure it truly looks like the Mustang Dark Horse with all the right character and features included, but also that we’re optimizing everything within the aerodynamics as well,” Rushbrook added.

Team Penske, Front Row Motorsports, and Wood Brothers Racing will all run the Dark Horse SC in the Cup Series. Ford Racing describes the Dark Horse SC as the most advanced and track-ready Mustang, created alongside the Mustang GTD supercar and GT3 race car.

Ford engineers tested the Dark Horse SC at Sebring and Virginia International Raceway, adding Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and a ducktail decklid to improve rear-wing efficiency by 10% without blocking the driver’s view.

The Dark Horse SC Special Edition features 3D-printed titanium parts from the Mustang GTD and a new aluminum hood with a big vent for better powertrain cooling.

With the hood vent tray removed, downforce jumps 2.5 times. The track pack’s carbon-fiber wing delivers 620 pounds of rear downforce at 180 mph. Not everything from the street Dark Horse SC will appear in NASCAR. Ford Racing must submit the car for approval before the Cup Series competition.
