The Fire That Killed Denny Hamlin’s Father

On December 28, a fire broke out at the Hamlin residence in Gaston County, North Carolina. Although the authorities arrived within minutes, the damage was already significant by then. Both of Hamlin’s parents managed to escape from the house but were critically injured when taken to the hospital.

Hamlin’s father succumbed to his injuries soon and was declared dead not long after he arrived at the hospital. His mother, on the other hand, is still under care at the hospital and is said to be actively recovering.

On Thursday, a community vigil was held at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center to honor Dennis’ memory, where friends and family gathered to pay their respects.

The Community Vigil for Dennis Hamlin

The folks from the racing community near Southside Speedway are known for having the back of every community member, despite their on-track differences. The owner of Southside Speedway, Lin O’Neill, who was also present in the crowd, shared his thoughts. He said:

“You can be the worst, fiercest competitors on the race track, but we’re all racing family. We want to make sure we’re supporting our racing family, and Denny is part of it. His family is part of it.”

John Bray, the crew chief of Southside Speedway, highlighted the community for the Hamlins in this tough time and said, “Everybody wants to say ‘I’m praying for you,’ but to sit there and hold hands and ask God to be with his family and be joined. He’ll grant you peace. That’s what He’ll do.”

Hamlin, who was quite close to his father, has also spoken about his role in shaping his career. Dennis’s vision and sacrifice for Denny were the key pieces that introduced the latter to the track early on.

Even in Hamlin’s win at Las Vegas, he described what it meant for him and his father:

“He’s the one that got me into racing. Just took me to a race track when I was 5, then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going. Sold everything they had. We almost lost our house a couple times. Just tried to keep it all going. So I’m glad he was able to see 60. That was super important to me.”

Although it has been a few days since Hamlin’s father passed away, there is no official word on his funeral, and even the progress on his mother’s health is being kept private at this time.
