Over the years, the name Earnhardt has become as popular as NASCAR itself. While a couple of legendary racers hail from the Earnhardt bloodline, the most accomplished figure in the family tree is Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Apart from his most obvious achievement of seven championship titles, Earnhardt also changed the sport in many ways. ‘The Intimidator’ entered the sport at a time when some of the greats dominated it. From there, he became a household name and eventually became as big as the sport.
And recently, when the date of the most popular statues of sports figures in the U.S. was revealed, Earnhardt added another posthumous achievement to his list.
Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Florida Statue Ranked Among the Most Popular in the Country
When The Sports Geek conducted a study to rank the statues of the most prominent sports figures, the results were rather surprising. While some obvious names made it to the list, several unexpected entries also made it.
The first spot was taken by Magic Johnson for his bronze statue in California. The structure, designed by artists Omri Amrany and Gary Tillery and initially unveiled in 2004, received a rating of 4.7 out of 5 to top the list.
Following Johnson were the statues of Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson in Kentucky and California, respectively. Next on the list was football legend Tom Landry, followed by NBA icon Larry Bird.
In sixth place was the statue of Earnhardt in Florida. Earnhardt was also the only driver on the list. His statue outside the Daytona International Speedway drew a rating of 4.5 out of five.

Peyton Manning, Joe Frazier, and Babe Ruth took the next three positions on the list. Finally, one of the most fearsome names in basketball, Michael Jordan, took the last spot in the chart for his Illinois statue, which had a rating of three out of five.
The Significance of Earnhardt’s Daytona Structure
Earnhardt’s statue in Florida was initially unveiled in 2002, a year after his tragic demise at the Daytona International Speedway. The structure was designed by John Lajba, a sculptor renowned for creating statues of several mighty figures in motorsports.

The statue is approximately nine feet tall and weighs about 1200 lbs. In the structure, Earnhardt stands on top of the number ‘3’ and holds the winner’s trophy. While the statue is a fine work of art, it serves as more than just another art piece outside a popular race track.
The significance of Earnhardt in NASCAR and Daytona, being the final destination where the legend drew his last breath, has almost given the structure the status of a memorial.
