‘We’d Butt Heads’ – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Once Shared Painful Truth About Life With Stepmom Teresa

Explore Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s difficult relationship with stepmother Teresa, from childhood tensions to business disputes that shaped the family legacy.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s relationship with his stepmother Teresa Earnhardt has been one of the most complex and contentious chapters of his life. Their strained dynamic began in childhood and extended into their professional relationship, creating lasting tensions that would affect the Earnhardt legacy for decades to come.

After his parents split up in 1978, little Dale Jr. lived with his mom in North Carolina. But when their house caught fire, his mom couldn’t afford to take care of him and his sister Kelley anymore. At just six years old they had to move in with their dad and his new wife Teresa.

This sudden change was just the beginning of a long, bumpy road. Their personal clashes eventually spilled over into business matters at Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) the racing company founded by Dale Sr. When Dale Sr. died in that tragic crash at the 2001 Daytona 500, Teresa took control of the company which only made things worse between her and Dale Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Reflects on Difficult Relationship with Teresa

“When I was a kid, man, me and Teresa, we’d butt heads hard,” Dale Jr. admitted while talking to Danica Patrick on her podcast. “She had this vision of her future with Dad and then bam, here come two kids from his previous marriage.”

Dale Jr. didn’t mince words about how things stand today: “The way I felt about her then is the way I feel about her now.” Clearly, time hasn’t healed these wounds.

Things came to a head in 2006 when Dale Jr. wanted to become the majority owner of DEI but Teresa wouldn’t let it happen. The situation got so bad that by 2007 Dale Jr. left the family business altogether to race for Hendrick Motorsports (started racing for them in 2008).

One thing that still bothers Dale Jr. is not being able to see his dad’s personal items stored at DEI. “Apparently, the day Dad died they locked the doors and nobody has been in there since,” he shared on his podcast in 2021. “Teresa’s made absolute sure that that’s the case.”

Despite all the drama, both Dale Jr. and Teresa have worked to keep Dale Sr.’s memory alive in NASCAR just in very different ways. While Teresa ran DEI after his death, Dale Jr. built his own successful career winning the Daytona 500 twice and becoming one of the sport’s most beloved figures.

Their shared connection to the great Dale Earnhardt Sr. seems to drive them apart rather than bring them together, adding a sad chapter to the famous Earnhardt family story.
