Chase Briscoe’s Pit Stall Becomes an Unexpected Repair Station

Wallace, who had just won Stage 2 and was running second in the final stage, saw his momentum vanish during a Lap 308 pit stop. His jack dropped too quickly, the left-front tire wasn’t secured, and by the time he rolled away, the wheel separated completely.

His 23XI Racing crew frantically waved for him to back up, but Wallace didn’t get the message until he was already further down the pit lane without his tire.

That’s when things took an unusual turn. Wallace’s disabled No. 23 Toyota came to a stop in front of the Joe Gibbs Racing stall for Briscoe’s No. 19. Fellow Toyota team members quickly jumped in to help reattach the wheel, saving Wallace’s team from a NASCAR penalty.

Briscoe Turns Wallace’s Tire Mishap Into a Light-Hearted Plea

For Briscoe, however, the disruption sparked déjà vu. After the checkered flag, he jumped on X with a tongue-in-cheek message to the rest of the field.

Posting a recording of his in-car radio, Briscoe laughingly wrote about the chaotic moment on X, “Twice this year I’ve been ripping around the track and James comes over the radio randomly screaming about grabbing the tire. Y’all gotta stop pulling into the 19 box when you lose a tire.”

As Briscoe hinted, Richmond wasn’t the first time his stall doubled as a rescue stop. Earlier this season, Christopher Bell experienced a loose wheel after leaving his own pit. Rather than risk a disaster on track, Bell made the split-second decision to pull into Briscoe’s box.

His JGR teammates quickly tightened the wheel, sparing Bell from a potentially dangerous situation and a harsher penalty. Bell was still sent to the end of the line for pitting outside his assigned stall, but it was a lighter penalty than the one he would’ve received had the tire come off under green.

These rare moments, while disruptive, have become part of NASCAR’s pit-road lore. While Wallace was left to wonder what might have been, Briscoe walked away with another hilarious story.
