What to expect from tonight’s Raiders vs. Browns game?

With the playoffs in the sights of both these teams, this is an important matchup. Cleveland is currently fighting for the top spot in the AFC North, and with a loss from Baltimore yesterday, they are now only one win away from having the same record as both the Ravens and Bengals.

Things are a bit more dire for the Raiders, who are now in last place in the AFC West but could still be in a position for a Wild Card spot.

An impossible situation for Cleveland on Monday Night Football tonight

Unfortunately, this crucial game for the Browns has become somewhat of a nightmare.

With over 20 players on the reserve/COVID list, question marks surround several positions. One position we are now sure of, however, is quarterback. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that both Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum have not tested out of the COVID protocols. That means that Nick Mullens will be Cleveland’s starting QB.

Mullens entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2017, and he spent that season on the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad. Over the past three years, Mullens has started 16 games. Most notably, in 2020, Mullens started eight games in place of 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo. He completed 211 of 326 passes for 2,437 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He is a capable backup.

Other notable players who will miss this game due to COVID are WR Jarvis Landry, RB Kareem Hunt, TE Austin Hooper, and DE Jadeveon Clowney. Head coach Kevin Stefanski is also on the COVID list.

The Raiders need to bounce back

The Raiders were dismantled 48-9 by the Kansas City Chiefs on the road last week. They have now dropped two in a row and five of the past six. It has not gone well for Las Vegas after their hot start to the season.

A big reason for their struggles has been the play of their defense. They have been susceptible to the pass, but they’ve really struggled against the run. The Raiders rank in the bottom half of the league in rushing yards allowed this season (1,629) and have given up 14 rushing touchdowns.

Even if Cleveland is down a lot of the key starters, the Raiders are going to have their hands full with Nick Chubb. Chubb is currently fifth in rushing yards this season with 926. He has also scored 6 rushing touchdowns. Mullens might not inspire a ton of confidence, but Chubb sure does. He should help keep this Monday Night Football game tonight somewhat close.
