The Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini saga has dominated NFL headlines for over five weeks, and no amount of roster-building or offseason preparation has slowed it down.
What started with Page Six publishing photos of the two from Sedona, Arizona, on April 7 has since expanded into a vast timeline of images, video, and reporting stretching back to at least 2020. Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14, but her departure did nothing to quiet the story.
Mike Florio Warns the Worst May Be Ahead for Mike Vrabel
The evidence has arrived in waves, with Page Six publishing photos that appear to show the pair kissing at a New York City bar in March 2020. TMZ then reported that Vrabel and Russini privately rented a boat together in Tennessee in June 2021, while the NFL reporter was visibly pregnant with her first child.
On Monday, TMZ published yet another image, this time from the 2022 NFL Honors afterparty in Los Angeles, showing Russini with her arm around Vrabel’s back while they were having a conversation at the event.
NBC’s Mike Florio has been one of the most consistent voices tracking the story’s trajectory. In a recent segment on “Pro Football Talk,” Florio made clear that the release of new information won’t stop on its own and that the real inflection point hasn’t arrived yet.
“At this point, there’s yet to be anything worthy of conversation,” Florio said. “It’s just further confirmation. And it does prove what you and I have said, it’s not going away.”
“I think the next big thing is when one of the parties to the relationship, who has, to date, been silent but for a couple of denials that have been apparently debunked by comments from the other party of the relationship and subsequent release of photographs and videos,” he added. “Whenever she chooses to speak, that’s when things are going to change.”
Russini has remained publicly silent since her resignation, though radio host Jon “Stugotz” Weiner, who spoke privately with her, signaled she would eventually share her side.
If Russini were to expose details that contradicted Vrabel’s private explanations to his family or the organization, or if her account implicated others around the league, the whole situation could shift overnight.

For now, Vrabel’s job with the New England Patriots appears to be safe, as Drake Maye has publicly defended him. The Patriots head coach received a standing ovation at a recent season-ticket-holder event, and the NFL has confirmed it is not investigating the matter under league policy.
However, as the calendar moves toward training camp, it becomes harder for Vrabel to manage both the locker room and his personal life. It will be interesting to see whether Russini speaks before then, and what that means for a Patriots franchise trying to build on a Super Bowl appearance.
