With New Contract and NFL’s No. 1 Ranking, Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill’s Next Race Is Against Father Time

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is the NFL's top player, and he's again one of the richest after agreeing to a contract adjustment.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins training camp had a celebratory spirit Saturday.

The Dolphins took the field just hours after the NFL revealed that one of their own — wide receiver Tyreek Hill — was voted by his peers as the league’s No. 1 player. And just before word spread that Hill got the contract adjustment he’s wanted for months.

Reaction to Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill’s No. 1 Ranking

ESPN first reported that Hill will sign an adjusted contract with the Dolphins that will pay him $90 million over the next three years, with $65 million guaranteed. PFN has since confirmed that the Dolphins have reworked Hill’s contract.

“I’m here to stay,” Hill wrote on X Saturday afternoon. “I promise to give you my all this year,” he said in another post.

While the full details are not immediately available, it seems Hill’s new deal ensures he’ll see his 2025 salary. Previously, his $23 million in owed compensation was not guaranteed.

“👀 YEAH REEK!!!!!” teammate Jalen Ramsey wrote on X.

With his near future now secured, Hill can now turn his undivided attention to being the best version of himself. His teammates are certainly rooting for it.

“That’s my dawg,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said when asked about Hill being voted the No. 1 player. “That was unbelievable to have a teammate like that voted best in the league. Doesn’t get better than that.”

Actually, there’s one way it could: if Hill keeps the crown for a long time.

If so, that would be his greatest achievement yet. Hill turned 30 in March, an age when speed and skill players often begin losing their edge

Hill will be 33 at his next free agency should he see his current deal to completion without an extension. You can count on one hand the number of receivers in NFL training camps this summer 33 or older.

But the Dolphins believe that Hill — who is the only player in NFL history with back-to-back 1,700-yard seasons — shouldn’t be held to normal assumptions.

“When you’re trying to explain the idea of an outlier, maybe Webster’s [Dictionary] in the definition of outlier you can have a picture of Tyreek,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “I think he reinforces the idea that you should never put anything in a box and never hold any individual to the timeline of the norm.

“… I don’t know what your eyes tell you, but my eyes tell me that he’s thriving [in training camp],” McDaniel continued. “And I think it reminds you that you don’t ever pigeonhole people in general to any sort of exact science. You let people define themselves.”

McDaniel then made the point that Hill being in the league at all went against conventional wisdom.

“There’s some scouting department in the National Football League that at one time — not necessarily currently — but at one time that didn’t draft receivers under 5’10”,” McDaniel said. “He’s under 5’10”. Whatever department would probably draft him [now].

“I think that goes for all players. It’s a lesson that individuals should be treated as individuals. Understanding that, generally, people are slower as they get older. Not all people. Some people are just fast all the time, like Tyreek.”
