The Miami Dolphins entered the 2024 season led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. This offseason, Tagovailoa inked a four-year, $212.4 million deal, and he started the 2024 campaign by leading the NFL in Week 1 passing yards.
However, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills. Who are the quarterbacks on the depth chart behind him?
Who’s on the Miami Dolphins QB Depth Chart After Tua Tagovailoa?
Tagovailoa leads the way for good reason — he’s one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL.
Through four seasons, Tua has thrown for 12,977 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. He’s also led the Dolphins to multiple playoff appearances. All of that culminated in his lucrative contract extension.
The backup quarterback spot is a bit different.
After a competition between Skylar Thompson and Mike White in training camp and the preseason, Thompson was named the winner with White getting cut.
Thompson was taken in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Since his selection, he’s played in seven games with two starts. In those games, Thompson has gone 1-1 and has thrown for a 57.1% completion percentage, 534 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Thompson also started a playoff game in 2022 after Tagovailoa had gone down with a season-ending concussion.
The Dolphins don’t have a third quarterback on the active 53-man roster. However, Tim Boyle is on the practice squad.
Undrafted in 2018, Boyle has played for four different teams and been on at six different teams’ practice squads.
Boyle has played in 20 career games, starting five of them. In those appearances, he’s gone 0-5, throwing for a 62.3% completion percentage, 934 yards, four touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His most recent starts came in 2023 with the New York Jets, starting two of them.
Beyond Thompson and Boyle, the Dolphins have no other quarterbacks under contract after Tagovailoa. If the team’s star quarterback is seriously injured, the Dolphins may have to look at free agency to fix their problem.
Currently, the most reliable free agent option is Ryan Tannehill, who the Dolphins drafted in the first round over a decade ago.
Now 36 years old, Tannehill spent the last five seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In 2023, he started eight games for the Tennessee Titans, going 3-5 and passing for a 64.8% completion percentage, 1,616 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Other free agent quarterbacks in 2024 include Brian Hoyer, Blaine Gabbert, and A.J. McCarron. Ultimately, there aren’t many options.
