Miami Dolphins Day 8 Practice Report: Jalen Ramsey Strikes Back

A day after giving up a long touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle, Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey was the best version of himself.

Jalen Ramsey is too good to stay down too long.

After a choppy Thursday practice, the Miami Dolphins‘ star cornerback was an unstoppable force during the team’s eighth training camp practice.

Ramsey had given up long touchdown passes to Tyreek Hill and (most recently) Jaylen Waddle in the first seven training camp practices, but he had the Dolphins’ offense on lockdown Friday.

Ramsey in 11-on-11s blew up a reverse (Jonnu Smith), forced a fumble (Raheem Mostert), and then later emphatically set the edge on a Mostert run in the backfield.

And that’s not even mentioning his blanket coverage in the passing game. (It didn’t help that the Dolphins’ quarterbacks were off, with Tua Tagovailoa and Mike White both throwing interceptions).

Put succinctly, Ramsey was Ramsey Friday.

“Any time Jalen is doing anything, you get an appreciation for it because whatever it is, he’s going to put his heart and soul into it when he’s out on that field,” Dolphins defensive passing coordinator Ryan Slowik said earlier in the day. “So it doesn’t matter what the skill is, what the activity, you get an appreciation and you feel his presence when he’s out there.”

Asked which of the seven different defensive back positions he would feel comfortable playing, Slowik replied:

“Seven. if there’s nine, [then] nine. He’s one of those avatar freak guys there, there’s, you name a skill on defense, he can probably execute it. And if he can’t, he’s going to figure out how and apply that knowledge. it’s an awesome person to be around and to coach.”

Is the return of Jaelan Phillips imminent? Eight months and change after tearing his Achilles tendon, Phillips sounds tantalizingly close to a return to action.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver told reporters Friday that Phillips is “an absolute freak. He is a specimen of a human being. He is a phenomenal person. And he is chomping at the bit to get out there on the field and play with this guy. So super excited.”

“Mike [McDaniel] showed a clip today of just how fast he was running in his rehab program,” Weaver added. “So let’s just say we got excited seeing those numbers.”

    How fast was Phillips moving?

“Faster than I’ve ever seen a dude that big run. Let’s say that.”

Having Phillips available early in the season would be a huge lift for a Dolphins defense that has gotten excellent production in camp from their healthy edge defenders: Chop Robinson, Emmanuel Ogbah, Mohamed Kamara, and Quinton Bell.

Dolphins who didn’t participate in Dolphins practice Friday: WR Erik Ezukanma, RB Salvon Ahmed, DT Calais Campbell, LBs Anthony Walker and Jordyn Brooks, and defensive backs Jordan Poyer and Cam Smith.
