Miami Dolphins Address Big Need Via Waivers (But Not the One You Might Think)

Get to know new Miami Dolphins WR Grant DuBose, the former seventh-round pick by the Green Bay packers claimed off waivers by Chris Grier Wednesday.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins added to their thinnest spot on the roster (aside from long snapper) Wednesday, claiming second-year wide receiver Grant DuBose off waivers.

DuBose, a hard-blocking former seventh-round pick, was cut Tuesday by the Green Bay Packers. He becomes the fifth Dolphins receiver on the 53, joining Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios, and Malik Washington.

    Miami Dolphins’ Waiver Wire Decisions

DuBose (6’2″, 201 pounds) has never seen the field in a regular season NFL game but does all the little things the Dolphins need out of a No. 5 receiver. He’s a sound blocker and a presence on special teams.

The former Division II athlete (he was a zero-star recruit who played his college ball at Miles before transferring to Charlotte for his final two years) was the fourth-to-last player taken in the 2023 NFL Draft.

He spent his rookie season on the Packers’ practice squad and had a chance to make the 2024 active roster after a solid preseason (five catches for 66 yards).

In Miami, it’s not hard to see the Dolphins asking him to do many of the things that River Cracraft would have done had he not started the season on injured reserve.

The Dolphins will almost assuredly sign at least one (and probably multiple) receivers to their practice squad. Erik Ezukanma is atop the list of options. He — like every Dolphins player cut Tuesday — went through waivers unclaimed.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Harris, cornerback Nik Needham, tight end Hayden Rucci, and offensive lineman Chasen Hines all seem like prime practice squad candidates.

Whether or not they bring back Hines, expect the Dolphins to add multiple offensive linemen to their practice squad. They neither traded for nor claimed one this week.

The Dolphins still need a long snapper but seem quite likely to bring back Blake Ferguson, whom they cut Tuesday. Teams often cut veterans they know they want on the 53 with the understanding that they’ll bring them back once all the procedural hoops are jumped through.

    More Dolphins Roster Moves

The Dolphins’ practice squad is coming into focus.

Among the players cut Tuesday but were back at practice Wednesday on the taxi squad: DBs Nik Needham and Jordan Colbert; WR Erik Ezukanma; and DT Jonathan Harris.

Dolphins GM Chris Grier also revealed to reporters Wednesday that the Dolphins are adding Tim Boyle to the practice squad as a No. 3 quarterback. Ex-Cardinals defensive tackle Naquan Jones is also joining the team’s practice squad.
