UNC head coach Hubert Davis loves what he sees from Montenegrin guard Luka Bogavac. But a longtime Carolina Basketball School coach who watched the 6-foot-5 freshman during practice sessions tells a more complete story about his early adjustment to Chapel Hill, revealing both promise and growing pains.
What Did Bill Robinson Observe in Luka Bogavac During Practice?
Bill Robinson shared his observations during an appearance on the “Locked on Tar Heels” YouTube channel. Robinson offered a balanced perspective when asked how Bogavac looked in person, highlighting talent and adjustment challenges.
“Yeah, you can tell he’s talented. He can handle it. He can shoot it. He just ooze talent. You know that the talent is there,” Robinson said.
However, Robinson also witnessed the typical challenges of joining a new program. He noticed some chemistry issues between Bogavac and his teammates during scrimmages, which isn’t uncommon for players adapting to a new system.
“When every time you go to a new programme, there’s growing pains of just being able to fit in and what his role is and just being able to play together,” Robinson explained.
Robinson was specific about what he observed during practice sessions. Bogavac’s and his teammates’ timing was frequently off, leading to miscommunications on the court.
“This is a time of year where even in open gym and things like that, you’ll see the ball thrown around a little bit different because you don’t know how to play with each other. There’s curls when you thought it was gonna fade and you have all the different things, thought somebody was gonna pick and roll and they pick and pop in the ball. There was a lot of that with him.”
Robinson’s conclusion was straightforward: “It just seemed like he hadn’t quite fit in with his lineup yet.”
How Does Hubert Davis View Luka Bogavac’s Potential at UNC?
Davis offered a much more optimistic view during a recent press conference, praising Bogavac’s basketball ability and personality. The head coach explained what impressed him most about the Montenegrin guard’s versatility.
“He’s somebody that can do a number of different things on both ends of the floor. He’s got great size. He can handle it, make plays with the ball in his hands, can shoot, score at many different levels, mid-range, get to the bucket, excellent passer,” Davis said.
Beyond basketball skills, Davis highlighted Bogavac’s contribution to the team’s culture. The coach was equally impressed with his new guard’s impact off the court.
Bogavac is “somebody that had a burning desire to be here and to be a part of this program. And as soon as he just walks into a room, it just brightens up. He just has that type of personality,” Davis said.

The 6-foot-5 guard arrives in Chapel Hill with professional experience from Europe. Bogavac played for SC Derby in the ABA League, averaging 13.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game during the 2024-25 season.
Those numbers demonstrate why Davis remains excited about his new guard’s potential. The contrast between Robinson’s practice observations and Davis’s overall evaluation reveals the complete picture of Bogavac’s transition to UNC. While the talent is undeniable, finding his rhythm with new teammates will take time as he adjusts to a different style of play and builds chemistry with his fellow Tar Heels.
