Louisville freshman basketball star Mikel Brown Jr. has barely unpacked his bags, but he’s already making headlines off the court and catching playful heat from one of the program’s biggest NBA names.
Mikel Brown Jr. has Big-Time Expectations
The five-star point guard, ranked No. 7 nationally in the Class of 2025, took to social media this week with a photo of a sleek gray GMC truck, asking his followers: “Anywhere in Louisville that I can find this specific truck??? Help me out please🙏🏽”

The post quickly caught the attention of former Louisville standout and current Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell, who couldn’t resist poking fun at the freshman’s search.
“All that damn NIL money you got lol you better get it shipped or somethin 😂😂,” Mitchell replied, referencing the lucrative name, image, and likeness deals now available to college athletes.
Brown Jr.’s truck hunt may be lighthearted, but his arrival in Louisville is anything but casual. The 6-foot-3 point guard enters the 2025-26 season as one of the most hyped recruits in recent program history. Known for his exceptional court vision, crafty ball-handling, and ability to score from anywhere, Brown Jr. projects as an immediate contributor for Louisville.

Before stepping on campus, he built an impressive resume. Brown Jr. starred for USA Basketball’s U18 and U19 teams, helping win gold at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup and competing on the world stage in Switzerland.
He also took home the McDonald’s All-American 3-point contest crown, averaged 29.6 points per game in his senior year at DME Academy. He was a semifinalist for the Naismith Boys High School Player of the Year.
Even with his offensive firepower, Brown Jr.’s transition to college ball will focus on adding strength to his naturally lean frame and refining shot selection to maximize efficiency.
Donovan Mitchell’s Connection to Louisville
Mitchell’s good-natured ribbing comes from someone who knows what it’s like to burst onto the scene in Louisville. As a freshman in 2015-16, he played double-digit minutes in every game, electrified fans with highlight-reel dunks, and quickly became a fan favorite before launching into an NBA career that has made him one of the league’s most dynamic scorers.
For Brown Jr., having that level of attention from an NBA All-Star validates his potential and connects him to the program’s rich lineage of guards who have gone on to professional success.

Mitchell’s quip about NIL money reflects the changing college basketball landscape. Today’s top recruits can earn significant endorsement income while still in school, a far cry from Mitchell’s playing days. For players like Brown Jr., financial flexibility can open doors beyond the court, whether upgrading transportation, supporting family, or investing in future ventures.
As Louisville fans look ahead to the 2025-26 season, the question remains: Will Brown Jr. find his dream truck in Louisville, or will he take Mitchell’s advice and have it shipped in? Either way, Louisville hopes his drive, both on and off the court, leads to something even bigger: wins.
