Once again, Kansas aced the recruitment of a highly coveted high-school prospect as two-time national champion coach Bill Self just secured the commitment of consensus No. 1-ranked high school prospect Tyran Stokes.
On Tuesday, the 6’7″ forward appeared on “Inside the NBA” to announce that he is joining Kansas, selecting the Jayhawks over Kentucky, Oregon, Louisville, and Southern California.
College Basketball World Reacts to Kansas Securing Tyran Stokes’ Commitment
Stokes’ decision ends the guessing game over which college basketball program will land the Rainier Beach High School star who has displayed elite ball-handling skills and finishing skills around the basketball.
After the most sought-after player in his class chose the perennial Big 12 contenders, the college basketball world had plenty to say.
ESPN’s college basketball insider Jeff Borzello raved about the move: “BREAKING: Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 senior in the country and the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NBA draft, will play at Kansas next season. Stokes gives Bill Self a superstar talent for the second straight season — and the No. 2 recruiting class in the country.”

247 Sports’ Kyle Tucker chimed in that Stokes’ commitment to Kansas is “a massive boost for Self’s roster and a huge blow to Mark Pope’s” Kentucky squad.
“No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes picks Kansas over Kentucky live on ESPN’s NBA pregame show,” he said. “Massive boost for Bill Self’s roster and a huge blow to Mark Pope’s. In theory, Pope now has a huge bankroll to spend on … somebody else, who’d better be a future pro and game-changer.”

“Field of 68” co-founders Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster also weighed in on Kansas landing Stokes. Goodman said that Stokes is a super talented multi-tool playmaker, with a body almost identical to that of Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks.
“(Stokes) is super talented. I think the first time I saw him was two summers ago, when he played with AJ Dybantsa on the same AAU team… I thought to myself, ‘This kid is going to be better than AJ,” Goodman said. “He is the No. 1 player in the country, and it’s not even a debate talent-wise.”
Dauster, for his part, noted that Stokes’ talent and ability belong in the same conversation as Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer, but not at the same level as Cooper Flagg.
Goodman noted that this could be Self’s final coaching run, as he has been dealing with health issues over the past few years.
Cameron Waddle, a prominent Big Blue Nation voice and content creator, weighed in on Stokes’ “long, crazy recruitment.” He noted that Kansas will face Kentucky on Nov. 10 in the 2026 Champions Classic at Chicago’s United Center.
Tyran Stokes has officially committed to Kansas.
The long, crazy recruitment has finally come to an end. Best of luck to him going forward.
Kentucky will not pivot, but get a chance to play him next year in Chicago at the Champions Classic. #BBN

KY Insider founder and A Sea of Blue editor Tristan Pharis revealed how Kentucky blew the race to secure the top high school prospect’s commitment.
“Tyran Stokes commits to Kansas. Kentucky is a Nike school, the brand Stokes is signed with. They had the last visit before his decision, the highest offer, and displayed a clear willingness to build around him. With that kind of pitch, you have to close,” he wrote.

Stokes, who averaged 31 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals per game as a senior, joins the Kansas program that just featured five-star recruit and top NBA Draft lottery pick Peterson.
The Seattle native will team up with fellow five-star prospect Taylen Kinney and a group of highly touted high school recruits and transfers, all aiming to help the Jayhawks advance beyond the second round for the first time since 2022.
Last season, Kansas went 24-11, with Peterson, Tre White, Flory Bidunga, Bryson Tiller, and Melvin Council Jr. leading the charge. They made the NCAA Tournament but were eliminated in the second round by Rick Pitino’s St. John’s squad.
Peterson declared for the 2026 NBA Draft, while White exhausted his college eligibility. Bidunga, Tiller, and Council led the exodus of Kansas underclassmen into the transfer portal.
Stokes is widely projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.
