Malik Cunningham College Stats: A Look Back at the WR/QB’s College Career

The Patriots' struggles extend to quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. In response, they activated Malik Cunningham for TNF. What were his college stats?

The New England Patriots are 2-10 in 2023 heading into Week 14. That is the second-worst mark in the NFL, only ahead of the 1-11 Carolina Panthers.

Both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe have struggled at times. In response, the Patriots activated quarterback and receiver Malik Cunningham from the practice squad. He will be on the active roster for Thursday Night Football. What were his college stats?

What Were Malik Cunningham’s College Stats?

Cunningham was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, where he attended Park Crossing High School. During his high school career, he passed for 6,276 yards and 71 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,926 yards and 32 more scores.

Following his successful high school career, he signed with the University of Louisville as a three-star prospect. He committed in April 2016 as an athlete, according to 247Sports. He would go on to spend six seasons with the Cardinals. He redshirted his first season in 2017.

Although he didn’t see much playing time until his third season, Cunningham passed for 9,664 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 3,182 yards and 50 touchdowns on 619 attempts. He gained an extra year of eligibility in 2020 when all athletes were given an additional year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cunningham was named the MVP of the 2019 Music City Bowl after passing for 279 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for an additional 81 yards. Louisville defeated Mississippi State 38-28 in that game.

Following his college career, Cunningham was drafted in the third round of the 2023 USFL Draft by the Birmingham Stallions, but he opted to commit to the NFL Draft instead. Cunningham participated in both the NFL Scouting Combine and Reese’s Senior Bowl during the draft process.

Cunningham ultimately went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft and decided to sign with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent. He was signed to the team as a quarterback and wide receiver. He has since found his way to the Patriots’ practice squad for the majority of the 2023 season.

While Cunningham isn’t expected to start on Thursday Night Football, he is an option for relief. Jones and Zappe, who have started all of New England’s games this season, have combined for 2,419 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Zappe is the expected starter for Thursday Night Football, but given the Patriots’ struggles, a Cunningham cameo would not be surprising.
