List of Indoor and Outdoor NFL Stadiums: How Many NFL Stadiums Are Domes?

Which NFL stadiums are indoor and which are outdoors? Of the 30 stadiums, 10 are domes or have a roof of some kind for the 2025 NFL season.

Out of the NFL’s 30 stadiums, 10 feature a dome or some form of roof (including five with retractable designs). With so many venues and frequent changes, it can be tough to remember which teams play indoors and which brave the elements outdoors. Below is a clear breakdown of every NFL stadium, distinguishing between indoor environments and open-air fields.

The National Football League has specific guidelines governing the use of retractable roofs to prevent teams from gaining an unfair competitive edge.

In stadiums with movable roofs, the home team is required to inform the referee or the senior league official assigned to the game at least 90 minutes before kickoff whether the roof will be open or closed. The roof must then be fully set in that position no later than one hour prior to kickoff.

There are occasional situations where stadium operations have to change on short notice. That was the case last season at AT&T Stadium as the Dallas Cowboys prepared for a Week 11 Monday Night Football matchup against the Houston Texans.

Dallas planned to open the roof for the first time in two years, but during the retraction process, strong winds nearing 30 mph caused a large metal panel to come loose and fall onto the field.

The incident occurred roughly three hours before kickoff, when the stadium was largely empty, and no injuries were reported. As a precaution, the Cowboys closed the roof and secured any loose materials to ensure there were no further problems once the game began.

“I know we opened it long before any fans or anybody is in there,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Associated Press. “The reason they do that is to make sure everything is working to avoid those kinds of risks if there’s any fans or anybody in here…

“They wouldn’t have done this game, or started this game, had there been any risk at all. Not only the NFL wouldn’t, but I wouldn’t if there was any risk at all. And there was no risk at all when we started the game.”
