Who Is Performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the Super Bowl in 2024?

Lift Every Voice and Sing is often referred to as the black national anthem and has previously been performed by Sheryl Lee Ralph and Mary Mary at Super Bowls.

The song played a prominent role in the civil rights movement and has been performed by huge stars such as Beyonce and Stevie Wonder in the past. It was written by James Weldon Johnson in 1990 and was adopted by the NAACP in 1919.

Performing Lift Every Voice and Sing at Super Bowl 58 will be Andra Day, a singer-songwriter and actress. Day is best known for her best-selling single “Rise Up,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Day shot to fame in 2015 with her album “Cheers to the Fall,” which was met with critical acclaim. Later, in 2017, she starred in the song “Stand for Something” for the film “Marshall,” which was nominated for the Best Original Song award at the Academy Awards.

Alongside her music, Day has also found success on screen. She made her acting debut in 2021 when Day starred in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” where her performance bagged her a Golden Globe.

Speaking to Apple Music during a press conference, Day expressed her honor at being asked to perform during the Super Bowl and how she talked to her mother about the privilege of assembling such a powerful performance.

“More than anything, it’s an honor. It’s exciting,” Day said. “And it feels intentional. I like to do things with intention and with purpose.”

On what Lift Every Voice and Sing means to her, Day said, “It’s a hymn of triumph, and that’s what I want people to encounter when I sing this song. I want them to know that we have victory and we have peace already. It feels like there’s an honor,”

However, Day didn’t shy away from how nervous she would be on Sunday, saying her “body’s gonna be shaking like hell.”
