Meet Luke Getsy, the Las Vegas Raiders’ 2024 Offensive Coordinator

New Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy will try to instill a foundation of rushing efficiency, something they struggled with in 2023.

In February 2024, the Las Vegas Raiders hired Luke Getsy, the former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, as their offensive coordinator.

Under Getsy, the Bears had one of the best run games in the NFL. Getsy will try to bring some of that rushing efficiency to Las Vegas, which struggled to run the football in 2023.

Everything You Need To Know About Luke Getsy

Getsy started coaching in 2007 as a graduate assistant at the University of Akron. In 2009, he was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Following that season, he was a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh. Indiana (PA) hired him as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011, and Western Michigan hired him as a wide receivers coach in 2013.

In 2014, Getsy received his first NFL coaching job after the Green Bay Packers hired him as their offensive quality control coach. He was promoted in 2016 to wide receivers coach for the Packers.

In 2018, he returned to the college ranks as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Mississippi State University. The following season, the Packers hired him back as quarterbacks coach and later as passing game coordinator in 2020.

In 2022, Getsy was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Bears and helped guide the offense to a franchise-record 3,014 total rushing yards while leading the league in rushing yards per game (177.3).

He helped former Bears QB Justin Fields set a single-season franchise rushing record by a quarterback with 1,143 rushing yards, becoming just one of three quarterbacks in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, joining Lamar Jackson (2019, 2020) and Michael Vick (2006).

In 2023, Getsy led an offense that ranked second in the NFL in rushing attempts (534), rushing yards (2,399), and rushing yards per game (141.1).

Under his coaching, wide receiver DJ Moore registered career highs in receptions (96), receiving yards (1,364), and touchdowns (eight). He also helped tight end Cole Kmet set career bests for receptions (73) and receiving yards (719).

How Long Has Getsy Been the Raiders’ Offensive Coordinator?

In February 2024, the Raiders hired Getsy as their offensive coordinator, resulting in a total of six months at the post.

Under Getsy, he brings a run-first, run-heavy approach, utilizing the outside zone scheme with some pre-snap motion, opening up play-action that he picked up under Kyle Shanahan, and leaning on heavy personnel sets to bring out additional blockers.

Getsy uses a mixture of personnel groupings; you might see some athletes out of their normal position.

Last season, he used 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) for most of their plays; it accounted for 57.8% of their offensive snaps (24th in the NFL). They used 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) on 23.2% of their snaps (eighth), 21 personnel (2 RB, 1 TE) on 11.1% of their snaps (seventh), and an occasional 13 personnel (1 RB, 3 TE) and 22 personnel (2 RB, 2 TE).

Who Was the Offensive Coordinator Before Getsy?

Mick Lombardi was the offensive coordinator for the Raiders for two years, from 2022 to 2023. Former head coach Josh McDaniels was also the play-caller at times. Both were fired halfway through the 2023 season.

Lombardi is now a senior offensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers, and McDaniels doesn’t have a job. After their firing, Bo Hardegree took over play-calling duties, but his short stint was unsuccessful. He is now the quarterbacks coach for the Tennessee Titans.
