Lamar Jackson Injury Update: What we know and what it means for the Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson was carted to the locker room after suffering an ankle injury in the Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns game on Sunday.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will not return after he suffered a right ankle injury against the Cleveland Browns Sunday. Jackson was carted to the locker rooom after suffering the injury on a low sack attempt by Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah while delivering a short second-down pass to TE Mark Andrews.

Lamar Jackson injury update

Owusu-Koramoah, either intentionally or not, twisted Jackson’s right foot while making the diving play, and Jackson immediately grabbed his ankle. Trainers helped the star QB to the sidelines and observed him in the blue medical tent. Jackson glumly went into the locker room on a cart shortly after.

“Lamar has an ankle sprain,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “We’ll look at it more tomorrow and see where we’re at.”

If the injury is significant, the Ravens are in a world of hurt, and the race for the AFC North is thrown wide open. Baltimore entered Week 14 with a one-game lead over the Bengals and a two-game cushion over the Browns and Steelers.

But Jackson is such a big part of Baltimore’s fortunes that the Ravens would probably no longer be the favorites to win the division if he has to miss significant time.

Tyler Huntley replaced Jackson on Sunday. The second-year pro filled in for Jackson against the Bears when Baltimore’s QB1 was sick. Huntley, who signed with the Ravens in 2020 after going undrafted out of Utah, had completed 31 of 47 passes for 258 yards, zero touchdowns, and 1 interception on the season before Week 14.

Baltimore’s brutal injury luck

Jackson’s injury is the latest — and potentially most impactful — for the Ravens. They played Sunday without their top two running backs and top two cornerbacks. Furthermore, Baltimore had 17 players on injured reserve entering Week 14.

And yet, they woke up Sunday in firm control of their playoff destiny after starting the season with wins in eight of their first 11 games.

Still, there were some major concerns on offense even with Jackson healthy. The Ravens haven’t scored 20 or more points since Week 9.

The schedule hasn’t been kind either. Sunday was the third of seven consecutive games the Ravens have to finish the season against teams with a plausible path to the playoffs. Baltimore hosts the Packers in Week 15 before games against the Bengals, Rams, and Steelers to close out the year.
