Kyle Shanahan Salary and Contract: How Much will the 49ers’ HC Make in 2023?

A closer look at San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's salary and net worth ahead of his team's much-anticipated SNF clash with the Dallas Cowboys.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has enjoyed tremendous success during his seven seasons (and counting) as the team’s lead skipper. His teams have compiled a 56-46 record and advanced to at least the NFC Championship in three different years.

Shanahan’s shown no signs of slowing down in 2023. His Niners are off to a 4-0 start and have beaten their first four opponents by an average score of 31-14. San Francisco is an early Super Bowl favorite and is looking to prove that again this Sunday night when they welcome the Dallas Cowboys to Santa Clara.

Dallas is another team with Super Bowl aspirations. It should prove a worthy foil for San Fran in this pivotal early-season game. But Shanahan’s known for getting his team up for big games. Which is part of why he’s rewarded so handsomely for his efforts.

What Is Kyle Shanahan’s Salary and Net Worth?

According to Sportico, Shanahan is one of eight head coaches in the NFL who earn at least $10 million annually. He’s joined by some names who virtually everyone would agree represent the upper-tier in coaching circles, including New England’s Bill Belichick (who leads the way at $20 million/year), Seattle’s Pete Carroll ($15 million), and Kansas City’s Andy Reid ($12 million).

The 43-year-old Shanahan got a long-term contract extension over the summer. His relative youth and success to this point gives one no reason to doubt that he’ll be coaching in the NFL for as long as he wants to. Which means he’ll be able to grow his wealth substantially in the years to come. But Shanahan’s already amassed a considerable net worth.

Finding an accurate source for Shanahan’s net worth is tougher than expected. Multiple sources (including Celebrity Net Worth, Sportskeeda, and The Sports Daily) spot him between $4-7 million. Given what we know of his yearly earnings, it seems safe to surmise that Shanahan is likely on the higher end of that spectrum.

Shanahan’s net worth pairs favorably with some impressive companies in his field. That includes names like Cinncinati’s Zac Taylor ($4 million), Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur ($7 million), and his opponent this Sunday night, Dallas’ Mike McCarthy ($9 million).

Shanahan and McCarthy have split their matchups evenly, with each side winning two games a piece. McCarthy’s Packers bested the 49ers in 2018, and he got the better of them again in 2020, his first year at the helm in Dallas. But most would agree that Shanahan has the edge because he’s narrowly gotten the better of McCarthy’s Cowboys in the past two postseasons.

Once again, most consider their early-season matchup a potential playoff preview. Whoever wins could enjoy a big edge months down the line when playoff seeding is a bigger consideration. Shanahan-led teams have consistently risen to the occasion in big-game-type atmospheres, so it’d be foolish to doubt them doing so again come Sunday night.
