2023 was the third version of the XFL’s attempt to gain traction as a spring football league. The 2001 version was one-and-done because it was unsuccessful. The 2020 version ended prematurely due to COVID. Is the third time the charm for the XFL? Will the league be back in 2024?
Is the XFL Coming Back in 2024?
There’s no denying Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s goal in reviving the XFL was never to produce just one season.
In an interview with USA Today, the former WWE superstar said, “This isn’t one-and-done. This isn’t ‘let’s expand the portfolio, let’s make a little money, and let’s get out of the game.'”
The XFL’s ratings really tailed off as the season went on, with viewership down considerably. But the league was able to complete its season and crown a champion.
The USFL had similar rating issues in 2022 but was able to return for a 2023 season. With the powers behind the XFL, it stands to reason they should have no trouble returning for a second season.
According to XFL News Hub’s Mark Perry, “The Defenders, Vipers, and Guardians are already putting out notifications for season ticket packages for the 2024 season.”
He continued, “The main storyline for the 2024 season will be if the XFL can build on their numbers in season two. If those metrics improve, we could see changes in 2025, including adding new teams.”
Given that there’s already a consideration for the league to expand in 2025, it would be a major upset if the XFL didn’t return for the 2024 season. At this point, fans of spring football should feel confident in seeing the XFL again next year.
