Preseason Week 2 is here, and one of the most intriguing matchups on the slate is the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Seattle Seahawks. But for Chiefs fans, there’s one burning question: will they get to see Patrick Mahomes take the field once more?
Will Patrick Mahomes Play Against Seattle?
The short answer, probably not. Head coach Andy Reid hinted strongly after Wednesday’s team’s final training camp practice. “There’s a chance I sit a couple of the starters or at least be short with them,” Reid said. “We want to make sure we get a good look at these young guys, so we’ll just see how it all rolls going forward.”
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Chiefs fans only got a blink-and-you ‘ll-miss-it glimpse of Mahomes in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Following an Arizona fumble on the opening kickoff, Mahomes ran just three plays, capping the short drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brownlee. That was it. Helmet off, mission accomplished, sideline duty for the rest of the night.
It’s all part of a bigger picture for Kansas City. This team is entering the 2025 season as the three-time defending AFC champions. Last season, they posted an outstanding 15-2 record, claimed their ninth straight AFC West crown, and stormed through the playoffs to reach Super Bowl LIX. But the year didn’t end with confetti; the Chiefs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in a heartbreaking loss.

That defeat has lit a fire under Mahomes and the entire roster. While preseason games can be a proving ground for rookies and roster hopefuls, for players like Mahomes, the real focus is February, not August. Protecting the franchise quarterback from unnecessary hits or freak injuries is just the better nature of things.
How Does Mahomes’ Presence Elevate the Chiefs Squad?
It’s difficult to blame supporters for wanting more, though. The Chiefs’ offense relies heavily on Mahomes, a football wizard whose presence can transform a preseason crowd into a regular-season extravaganza. However, Reid’s approach has always focused on the long term. Finding out what they have in everyone else is now the top goal for Kansas City, which is aware of what it has in Mahomes.
As the Chiefs prepare to face the Seahawks, the spotlight will shift toward young players battling for a roster spot and backups looking to make an impression. And while Mahomes may spend most of the night in a cap instead of a helmet, his influence will still be felt in the huddle before warmups, in quiet advice to young receivers, and in that ever-present standard of excellence he sets.
So, will Mahomes play against Seattle? Probably not. But if you’re a Chiefs fan, you know his real stage is yet to come.
