Will Bears QB Caleb Williams Play vs. the Chiefs?

Through his two preseason appearances, Williams has taken the NFL by storm with his playmaking ability. However, it was announced by Chicago’s head coach Matt Eberflus on Tuesday that neither Williams nor the rest of the team’s starters will play against the Kansas City Chiefs in their preseason finale.

In Williams’ two starts, he has passed for 170 yards and no touchdowns while completing 10 of his 20 pass attempts. He has also carried the ball twice for 20 yards and a touchdown. Notably, though, a lot of his plays have come off script, making for some very flashy plays.

More specifically, he was 6-of-13 for 75 yards with one rush for seven yards and a touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals. Against the Buffalo Bills, he completed four of seven passes for 95 yards. The Bears won both games by a score of 27-3 and 33-6, respectively.

In total, Williams played 43 preseason snaps. For reference, the team had initially planned for him to see between 45 and 55 snaps, according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. He now waits until Week 1 to hit the field again, when the team faces the Tennessee Titans in Chicago.

With Williams out of the picture, second-year quarterback Tyson Bagent will handle the starting job. Through two games, Bagent is 14-of-19 for 150 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Most recently against the Bengals, he was 7-of-8 for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to Bagent, the Bears QB depth chart includes Brett Rypien and Austin Reed, who will help finish the rest of the game. Rypien has received the most reps of all Bears quarterbacks this preseason and has completed 15 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Reed, on the other hand, has thrown just four passes all preseason, going 2-of-4 for 50 yards.
