Buccaneers’ Super Bowl History

Tampa Bay has appeared in two Super Bowls and won both of them. They are one of two NFL franchises to have at least two Super Bowl appearances without a loss, along with the Baltimore Ravens.

Their first Super Bowl win came in the 2002 season. They won the NFC South title with the team’s best-ever record, 12–4, and scored more points in two playoff wins over the 49ers and Eagles than in Bucs playoff history combined.

They were heavy underdogs in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles and fell behind early. However, the Bucs persevered and took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, ultimately winning the game 27-10.

They went on to rout the Oakland Raiders by a score of 48–21 in Super Bowl XXXVII. The game was played on Jan. 26, 2003, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.

The Raiders came into the game as four-point favorites. However, offensive struggles from the Raiders and a dominant defensive performance from Tampa throughout much of the game unraveled the Raider’s offense.

Raider’s quarterback Rich Gannon threw a Super Bowl record five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. The Buccaneers also sacked Gannon five times and scored 34 consecutive points to build a 34–3 lead late in the third quarter.

The Buccaneer’s second Super Bowl win came in the 2020 season when they acquired long-time New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in free agency.

They improved on their 7–9 record from the previous season by finishing 11–5 to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

In the Wild Card round, Tampa Bay won their first playoff game since Super Bowl XXXVII, defeating Washington 31–23. They advanced to the Divisional Round against the New Orleans Saints, who had swept them in the regular season. Tampa Bay defeated the Saints 30–20 to avenge those losses and advance to the NFC Championship Game.

The Buccaneers then beat the top-seeded Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game 31–26 to advance to Super Bowl LV.

In the Super Bowl, the Buccaneers defeated the defending AFC and Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, 31–9.

The game was played on Feb. 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the home stadium of the Buccaneers, marking the first time a team played a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

For the first time under quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs failed to score a touchdown and lost by double-digits, making them the third Super Bowl team not to score a touchdown.

Costly penalties also plagued the Chiefs, and the Buccaneers capitalized on that to take a commanding 21–6 lead at halftime and dominate the remainder of the game.

Brady, who also extended his player records for Super Bowl appearances to ten and wins to seven, was named Super Bowl MVP for a record fifth time and was the first to receive the award with multiple franchises.
