The New York Giants were founded in 1925, and they are currently celebrating their 100th season. To commemorate the anniversary, the franchise created a special logo, unveiled new throwback uniforms, named the 100 best players and moments in Giants history, and more.

Why Is the New York Giants’ Logo Different?

The Giants’ commemorative logo will appear mid-field during home games and be worn as a patch on the Giants’ uniforms this season.

“The commemorative logo was created to showcase the franchise’s rich history with the background shield inspired by the shape of the Polo Grounds, the team’s first home in 1925 – and with the zeros designed in the outline of Giants Stadium,” according to the team.

“At the base is a re-creation of the team’s classic skyline logo, representing every player who has worn the Giants uniform. The player is overlaid on a football, which is named “The Duke” in honor of Wellington Mara and features eight laces to symbolize the team’s eight NFL championships.”

The Giants also released their new “Century Red” throwback jerseys, which are meant to be an ode to the Giants teams of the past with a fresh new twist.

“The uniform harkens back to the earliest days of the franchise and features tan pants; red socks with blue and white stripes from the team’s inaugural 1925 season; red jerseys accented with blue from 1933, when the Giants played in the first-ever NFL Championship Game; and an iconic winged helmet honoring the 1938 champions as the Giants became a cornerstone in the foundation of the league,” per the team’s press release.

“The entire Mara family is proud to commemorate the 100th season of New York Giants football,” said John Mara, President and CEO of the Giants. “As we reflect on this landmark season, I think about my family, and most specifically my father, grandfather, and uncle who dedicated their entire lives to the Giants and the NFL.

“We would not be who we are without their vision and leadership. When we became partners with the Tisch family in 1991, our franchise grew even stronger. Together, the Mara and Tisch families are proud to celebrate the history of our franchise as we look to the future of Giants football.”

Revisiting Giants’ Top Moments Over the Last 100 Years

Giants fans have had plenty to celebrate over the last century, as the franchise has won four Super Bowls. Let’s revisit each of the team’s Super Bowl victories.

    Super Bowl 21, Jan. 25, 1987

This was the Giants’ first Super Bowl victory in franchise history, and they beat the Denver Broncos 39-20.

New York was led by head coach Bill Parcells, linebacker Lawrence Taylor, and quarterback Phil Simms. Simms earned Super Bowl MVP honors after completing a Super Bowl-record 22 of 25 passes (88% completion rate) while throwing for 268 yards and three touchdowns.

Denver actually led 10-9 at halftime, but the Giants came alive in the second half, outscoring the Broncos 30-10 over the final two quarters. The Giants’ 39 points were the most scored by an NFC team in the Super Bowl at the time.

    Super Bowl 25, Jan. 27, 1991

The Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills in a 20-19 nail-biter. New York controlled the clock in order to contain Buffalo’s high-powered “K-Gun” offense. The Giants held the ball for 40 minutes and 33 seconds, a Super Bowl record.

Giants running back Ottis Anderson earned the Super Bowl MVP award after rushing 21 times for 102 yards and a touchdown.

However, this game would go down in history for Bills kicker Scott Norwood’s wide-right missed 47-yard, game-winning field goal attempt with eight seconds left.

    Super Bowl 42, Feb. 3, 2008

The Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14 to ruin their perfect season.

New York entered the game as huge underdogs, as they went 10-6 during the regular season and were a Wild Card team.

This game is best remembered for David Tyree’s famous “Helmet Catch.” This led to Plaxico Burress catching the game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds left.

The Giants’ victory in Super Bowl 42 is considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history, and Eli Manning earned Super Bowl MVP honors for his performance.

    Super Bowl 46, Feb. 5, 2012

Once again, the Giants took down the Patriots on the NFL’s biggest stage, defeating them 21-17. This was a highly anticipated rematch of Super Bowl 42, with Manning once again facing off against Tom Brady.

New England led 17-9 in the third quarter, but the Giants’ defense stepped up, and New York ultimately won the game.

Mario Manningham made a huge 38-yard catch to shift the momentum and put New York in position for Ahmad Bradshaw’s game-winning touchdown run.

This solidified Manning’s legacy, and Manningham’s critical late-game catch drew comparisons to Tyree’s helmet catch.
