Terry McLaurin Injury Update

McLaurin originally sustained his quad injury way back in Week 3. The injury occurred when he dove toward the end zone on what appeared to be a 57-yard touchdown before officials overturned the score upon review.

What started as a seemingly routine quad strain turned into a prolonged absence after McLaurin consulted multiple medical specialists, including core muscle expert Dr. William Meyers. The involvement of such a specialized physician suggested the problem might be more complex than originally assessed.

McLaurin missed four consecutive games before making his return on Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8. He didn’t receive heavy volume with just four targets but was on the field and looking healthy for most of the contest. The veteran receiver had two impressive sideline catches, including one for a touchdown that showcased his elite toe-tapping ability.

Unfortunately, McLaurin aggravated his quad in the second half during a diving catch and exited the game. When speaking to reporters afterward, he said he felt ‘alright’ but evidently that assessment was overly optimistic.

Head coach Dan Quinn ruled McLaurin out immediately on Wednesday for the team’s Week 9 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The speed with which McLaurin was ruled out suggested significant concern about the injury’s severity.

McLaurin was also ruled out early in the week again ahead of the team’s Week 10 contest against the Detroit Lions. He did not practice all week.

This week started out no different. On Monday, Quinn ruled McLaurin out for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid. However, there is good news in McLaurin’s recovery progress.

McLaurin traveled to Spain with the team. Earlier in his recovery, he would have remained in Washington. This suggests meaningful progress toward a return.

When the team held its first practice on Wednesday, McLaurin did not officially practice, which was expected. But he did do individual drills off to the side. That is a great sign for his prospects of returning after the Week 12 bye.

Quinn provided an encouraging update on McLaurin as preparations for Washington’s international game began. “He’s here. So he’ll do some of the movement and the on-field portions of the rehab. The first couple of weeks, he was not able to do that. That’ll take the build-up time to do that, but we’re glad he’s here, taking the next step. Sometimes these injuries take longer than you want, and they’re not predictable to say it’s going to be this set time. We’re just going to continue with the next step, and this is a good sign that we can take the next steps,” Quinn said.

Injured players typically progress to individual work at practice while not officially participating prior to making their return to practice. With two weeks between now and the Commanders’ practices ahead of Week 13, if McLaurin is already doing individual work, he should be ready to go after the bye.

McLaurin Fantasy Outlook

The quad injury has proven far more troublesome than initially anticipated for fantasy managers who have been without their WR2 for the majority of the season. McLaurin hadn’t missed a game in four consecutive seasons prior to Week 4, making his extended absence particularly concerning.

Through three games before the initial injury, McLaurin had managed 10 catches for 149 yards but had not yet recorded an end zone target. However, those numbers reflected early-season growing pains rather than any decline in McLaurin’s abilities.

His Monday night performance in Week 8, despite being limited, showed he can still make elite-level catches when healthy. The touchdown grab demonstrated his impressive body control and awareness. He caught three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown.

The Commanders are so desperate at wide receiver that they signed Treylon Burks and elevated him for games. However, Burks has also been ruled out for Week 11 after undergoing finger surgery. The receiving corps has been decimated by injuries.

Deebo Samuel Sr. will continue operating as the primary receiving threat, with Chris Moore and Jaylin Lane providing support. Robbie Chosen and Burks finished second and third among Commanders wide receivers in routes last week, ahead of Lane and Moore. Samuel is the only Washington receiver that should be anywhere close to Week 11 fantasy lineups.

The earliest fantasy managers should realistically expect to see McLaurin again is Week 13, following the team’s bye week. This timeline would allow for proper healing of what has become a chronic issue.

The positive news about McLaurin doing individual drills suggests his recovery is progressing well. Fantasy managers holding McLaurin should feel encouraged by this development. His talent remains elite when healthy, and a Week 13 return now appears realistic given his current trajectory.

Hopefully, McLaurin can return in Week 13 ready to contribute down the stretch. The extra week off during the bye combined with his on-field work in Madrid should provide the recovery time needed to put this quad issue behind him.
