There is still plenty of data to gather, but there is no doubt that his impressive opener has at least put real pressure on Jacoby Brissett, something that could have a fantasy football impact.

There is no denying that Beck looked good against Carolina. The third-rounder averaged north of eight yards per pass during his three years as a starter in college, and that efficiency was on full display in his first taste of the professional game.

Not only does he have to win this job, but he also has to produce when given the opportunity. Over the past 20 years, rookie QBs drafted in the third round or later have averaged just 13.1 fantasy points in their starts.

Across that sample, they were held under 20 points in 86.9% of their starts. That is a lack of upside next to a mean outcome that simply doesn’t matter.

Trends are made to be broken, and there is pedigree to chase here, but let’s contextualize this performance a bit. This wasn’t an NFL-level defense that he was facing, and it came in a spot with no real pressure.

Do you remember where we stood 12 months ago? Trey Lance lit up the Detroit Lions. He completed 65% of his passes and had a pair of touchdowns for a Los Angeles Chargers team that put 34 points on the board. It was impressive, but it was not predictive.

We still have no idea when that is going to happen. Arizona paid Brissett this summer, and they are going to go in that direction to open the season, but every loss is a step toward leaning into the developmental route.

• No, you shouldn’t go out and try to up your exposure rates.

We know that Beck can be efficient in a perfect environment, but we already knew that. I think he’s likely to enter 2027 as the starting QB of a Cardinals offense that has a strong supporting cast. That’s enough for teams taking the long-term approach to gamble on.

We are assured of nothing. The Atlanta Falcons have built a solid foundation through skill-position players, and that hasn’t resulted in anything of value at the QB position. We don’t know that this situation will mirror that, but let it serve as a cautionary tale. This is a step in the right direction, but we are far away from being able to make any lasting claims.
