QB and TE Fantasy Injury Report Week 17: Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz, Pat Freiermuth, and more injury updates

As fantasy football managers finalize lineups for Week 17, what are the latest updates surrounding QBs and TEs on the injury report?

While rankings and projections are beneficial, few things are more important in fantasy football than following injury updates. Injuries not only impact the player in question but the teammates and the offenses around them. Here’s an update on some critical QB and TE injury reports to watch and their fantasy football impact.

Fantasy Football Injury Report: QB update

Let’s go through the injuries currently impacting quarterbacks. Monitor these situations throughout the week and have contingency plans, if necessary.

Teddy Bridgewater, Denver Broncos

Teddy Bridgewater remains in the concussion protocol. Drew Lock will start Sunday. The Broncos are currently ravaged by COVID-19 and will be starting three practice squad wide receivers to go along with their backup quarterback. It’s an unmitigated disaster.

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. He’s out this week. Sean Mannion will start with either Kellen Mond or Kyle Sloter backing him up. This undoubtedly downgrades Justin Jefferson and makes K.J. Osborn unstartable.

Justin Fields and Andy Dalton, Chicago Bears

Justin Fields remained limited at practice due to an ankle issue. He’s listed as questionable, but head coach Matt Nagy already announced Andy Dalton will start Sunday. It’s probably good news for Darnell Mooney.

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers

2021 has taught me that Kyle Shanahan is the new Pete Carroll when it comes to discussing injuries. He can’t be trusted.

Jimmy Garoppolo did not practice all week due to his UCL sprain in his right thumb. He’s listed as doubtful, but it’s evident Trey Lance will make his second career start on Sunday. Adam Schefter tweeted out that Garoppolo is not expected to play. Lance is an immediate QB1. I wouldn’t downgrade anyone in this offense, either.

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

The Lions listed Jared Goff as doubtful due to a knee injury. He didn’t practice all week, and players listed as doubtful rarely play. Tim Boyle is set to start once again, which is a downgrade for all Lions.

Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles

Jalen Hurts practiced fully on Friday and is not listed on the final injury report. Barring any setbacks, his ankle is fine. He’ll start Sunday.

Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson did not practice Thursday and Friday. He’s listed as questionable due to his sprained ankle, but he’s likely not going to play.

Tyler Huntley, who returned from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday, is expected to start but it may not be confirmed until the last possible minute to give Jackson the time to prove if he can play.

Update: Jackson is inactive. Huntley will start.

Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns

Baker Mayfield is listed on the injury report as having just one injury now — his left shoulder. He practiced in full all three days and will start Monday.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers actually got in a limited practice Friday. Who knows what exactly that means? Regardless, Rodgers was never at risk of missing this week’s game. He will continue to barely practice but ultimately play through his toe injury.

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger is continually listed on the injury report with a pectoral and right shoulder issue. Nevertheless, he’s fine and carries no injury designation into Monday’s game.

Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts

On Saturday, the Colts activated Carson Wentz from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Similar to Travis Kelce last week, the team is activating him by the Saturday deadline with the hopes he will be cleared to play Sunday. Under the new protocols, despite being unvaccinated, Wentz can return to action Sunday as long as he has no symptoms. He’s fully expected to start, but we won’t be able to confirm that until Sunday morning.

Update: Per Stacey Dales, head coach Frank Reich confirmed Wentz is cleared to play. He will start.

Fantasy Football Injury Report: TE update

Are there any tight end injuries we need to be concerned about? The TE market is already thin, so your alternatives will likely be grim if you have a player on this injury report.

Tyler Conklin, Minnesota Vikings

Tyler Conklin got in a full practice Friday. He’s dealing with a hamstring issue and is listed as questionable. The full practice Friday suggests he will play, and Adam Schefter tweeted out he’s expected to do so. However, with Sean Mannion starting, Justin Jefferson is the only Vikings pass catcher you can trust.

Jared Cook and Donald Parham, Los Angeles Chargers

On Friday, the Chargers placed Jared Cook on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Therefore, he’s out this week. With Donald Parham on the injured reserve already, Stephen Anderson appears to be the Chargers’ starter at tight end. Do not start him in fantasy.

Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts

Jack Doyle had a strange practice routine this week. He didn’t participate Wednesday or Thursday but logged a full session on Friday. He’s questionable with knee and ankle issues, but the full practice on Friday suggests he should play.

Update: Doyle is active.

Zach Ertz, Arizona Cardinals

Zach Ertz has been playing through a minor hamstring strain for several weeks now. He’s not listed on the final injury report and will do so again.

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers

After missing last week’s game with a concussion, Pat Freiermuth returned to three full practices this week. He has cleared the concussion protocol and will play Monday night.

James O’Shaughnessy, Jacksonville Jaguars

James O’Shaughnessy did not practice all week due to a hip issue. He’s out this week.

Darren Waller, Las Vegas Raiders

On Saturday, the Raiders did not activate Darren Waller from the reserve/COVID-19 list. As a result, he is out this week. Foster Moreau remains a serviceable back-end TE1 streamer.
