Hawk-Eye Innovations has transformed other sports and the way they are played, and now it's the NFL's turn -- how will the league use it?

My parents like to watch tennis, and I can remember standing there transfixed as a replay animation unfolded of the shot that just happened. In or out, the judge leaned on Hawk-Eye Innovations to decipher the call. The same technology capacity that has revolutionized tennis, cricket, and other sports will be coming to the NFL in the near future. How will the NFL implement Hawk-Eye to improve the quality of football games and fans’ experience?

Waving Goodbye to the Chain Gang?

Perhaps you’ll miss the nostalgia of awaiting the chain crew to bring out the sticks for a measurement — that delay of gratification can be thrilling. However, it has limitations, and in a game of inches, technology should be incorporated to ensure that players are determining the outcomes of games as much as possible.

The NFL talked about its progress in a statement:

“Through this partnership, Sony and the NFL will be working collaboratively with coaches, players, teams, and leadership across the organization to transform the future of football. This includes an expansion of Sony’s sports technology through Hawk-Eye Innovations to support officiating and the development of on-field and sideline technologies, including a new coach’s sideline headset that will debut in the 2025 season.

“With this new partnership, the NFL and Sony will continue to work together to create new opportunities within football through the power of technology and remain committed to evolving the game to maximize engagement and enjoyment for fans, coaches, and players alike.”

This technology will affect first-down measurements, but it will also allow coaches to communicate with one another. However, as the technology enhances and expands, the league will work with Sony and Hawk-Eye to leverage it. In other words, there is a vision for it now, but there is room for that vision to change and develop.

Nonetheless, the chain gang won’t be obsolete per se. The traditional method would serve as the backup for any technological malfunction.

NFL Unveils Hawk-Eye Technology During Preseason Action

The NFL introduced Hawk-Eye technology in the first full week of preseason action as the New York Giants hosted the Detroit Lions. As the league continues to innovate in a variety of ways, this technology offered a glimpse into the future.

During the game’s broadcast, the Hawk-Eye technology was utilized to showcase the ball was short of the first down marker. Warren Sharp shared a clip of Hawk-Eye’s television debut.

While it will certainly take time for viewers to get used to this technology, it is certainly a welcome addition to replace the rather outdated chain gang.

The NFL will continue to test this technology during the preseason, but the full unveiling of the Hawk-Eye system would likely come next year, though the potential to move that up exists.

NFL official Carl Cheffers recently discussed the new rules with reporters at New York Jets’ training camp. In addition to Hawk-Eye technology, Cheffers mentioned that the NFL will be experimenting with a chip in the football for ball placement during Saturday’s game between the Jets and the Washington Commanders.

While the days of the chain gang might be coming to an end, it’s exciting to see the NFL embracing the latest innovations in technology.
