ESPN Analyst Makes Case for 4-Time Pro-Bowler as 2024 NFL MVP Over Lamar Jackson — ‘He Has Changed That Offense’s Trajectory’

While Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP, one ESPN analyst argues his teammate is more deserving of the 2024 NFL MVP as it stands.

After an 0-2 start to the season, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have bounced back by stringing three straight wins. In Week 5, they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 41-38 in what was arguably the game of the season.

Jackson threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and has emerged as an MVP contender. However, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg believes that Jackson’s teammate is the one who should be considered the MVP of the league heading into Week 6.

Mike Greenberg Makes a Case for Lamar Jackson’s Teammate Being the MVP

On ESPN’s “Get Up,” Greenberg said that Ravens running back Derrick Henry should be considered for this year’s MVP award.

“While Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP, and deservedly so, and proving himself to be one of the great players that we have ever seen, it is my opinion that the Baltimore Ravens, who lead the NFL in offense right now are going to continue to do that all year long, and that the reason is Derrick Henry.”

“It is my opinion that Derrick Henry right now deserves serious consideration for MVP of the league. … I don’t think they’re going to lose any [games] any time soon. I know it’s something [on which] no one will agree with me, but I think Derrick Henry has changed that offense’s trajectory, and I think they are the best team in the NFL because of it.”

Henry signed a two-year $16 million deal with the Ravens this offseason and was solely brought in to push the team over the line to win a Super Bowl. Baltimore lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game last season, where they were criticized for not running the ball.

Now, with Henry, the Ravens are heavily reliant on running the ball and currently look like one of the best teams in the NFL. They currently lead the NFL in rushing yards per game with 211.2. If Baltimore continues to win games, both its running back and the quarterback will undoubtedly be considered for the MVP award.

A Look at Derrick Henry’s Impact on the Ravens

The Ravens currently lead the NFL with the highest total yards per game on offense this season, 447.6 yards per game. Greenberg mentioned that Henry leads the NFL in rushing yards per game (114.4), leads the NFL in touchdowns (six), and has scored a touchdown in every single game this season.

In the game against the Bengals, after Cincinnati missed the field goal in overtime, Henry rushed for 51 yards and set up Justin Tucker’s game-winning field goal. Whether or not Henry wins the MVP award remains to be seen, but Greenberg made some valid points about the running back’s importance to the Ravens.

Jackson, the two-time NFL MVP, has also played quite well and, given the league’s history, will be much more likely to win the MVP award than Henry. In five games this season, the 27-year-old quarterback has thrown for 1,206 yards, nine touchdowns, and just one interception while completing 65.3% of his throws. He has also rushed for 363 yards and two touchdowns on 53 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

Both Henry and Jackson are equally important for the Ravens, and they will be required to be at their best throughout the season if Baltimore is to win its first Super Bowl since 2013.
