Eagles Predicted To Cut Ties With Star WR in Wild Blockbuster Trade for $72 Million AFC East All-Pro

The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn’t rush into any major moves the rest of the offseason because of how dominant their 2024 campaign was.

Winning the Super Bowl by double digits is a sign not much needs to change, but in the Eagles’ case, finding a few additions on defense could be crucial. Philadelphia lost multiple crucial pieces of Vic Fangio’s unit in free agency, highlighted by Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

These exits would signal the help is needed most on the defensive line, where Williams and Sweat wreaked havoc, but one wild trade idea views their needs differently.

NFL Analyst Predicts Eagles Will Trade DeVonta Smith for Jalen Ramsey

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier revealed in a recent press conference the organization is looking to deal All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. This sparked plenty of trade rumors and ideas for Ramsey’s next NFL home.

One of the wildest proposed deals is from Yahoo Sports’ Coby Leibowitz, who pitches that the Dolphins send Ramsey, the No. 13 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and a 2026 second-round pick to Philadelphia for star wide receiver DeVonta Smith and the No. 32 pick.

“Ramsey would be the perfect veteran contributor that could help teach the talented young cornerback duo Philadelphia has,” Leibowitz wrote for Yahoo Sports. “The Dolphins solidify their offense as the most dangerous in the league, and the Eagles get a veteran leader at corner and draft capital.”

Leibowitz believes Smith would play alongside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but it feels more likely that the former would be on the move if the Dolphins made this trade. Although Smith doesn’t bring the same level of experience or game-breaking speed as Hill, he is a Super Bowl champion with multiple 1,000-yard campaigns under his belt.

Pairing together the former Alabama Crimson Tide teammates would still provide Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a strong receiver room despite hypothetically losing the Super Bowl champion, Hill. In a less productive year than usual for Hill, Tagovailoa still slotted as the No. 8 QB in PFSN’s QB+ metric. Smith is five years younger than Hill and doesn’t have the kind of baggage that the veteran speedster does.

But why would the Eagles be willing to cut ties with Smith after another productive season in Philadelphia in which they won it all? It seems very unlikely that Philly would even consider this kind of package given Smith’s talent, age, and relationship with Jalen Hurts.

However, Leibowitz’s rationale relied heavily on what Eagles general manager Howie Roseman can do with his higher-than-anticipated Round 1 pick.

“Players like Malaki Starks, Mike Green, and Shemar Stewart are some mid-first-round gems that could be great pickups for them. They could also get players like Tetairoa McMillan, Luther Burden III, and Matthew Golden if they want to replace Smith as well.

“Smith recently signed an extension that pays him $25 million per year. The Eagles could get off of that contract, get a top receiver prospect, and still get a top veteran corner, all for Smith,” Leibowitz concluded.

There’s one thing no NFL fan should do at this point, which is to doubt Roseman’s ability to make the best possible moves.

While a fun idea, it seems extremely unlikely that this blockbuster trade idea will ever become a reality — but it’s fun to imagine the possibility with two huge stars involved.

More likely than not, the Eagles will add talent through the draft and perhaps move tight end Dallas Goedert rather than making the kind of splashy move Leibowitz suggested.
