When the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they knew they were getting a winner both on and off the field. When they made him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history, they understood that he could be the face of the franchise they were looking for.
This week alone has shown how right they were in their assessment of the stoic passer.
Hurts has always been a quiet person, both in public and behind the scenes. His actions, however, show a man willing to help his community in any way he can.
Even in the middle of a tragedy.
Jalen Hurts Helps Grieving Family of Deceased High School Athlete
North Shore High School in Houston was rocked when 18-year-old Jarvon Coles was found with a gunshot wound while having a seizure in the backyard of what was a high school party. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Coles, according to his grandfather and guardian Braxton, was a two-time first-team all-district linebacker for the high school and had 15 offers from colleges. His family, teammates, and the community at large are left with the memories that the young Coles brought both on and off the field.

When tragedies like this happen, something as simple as high school rivalries will be quickly overlooked. When Hurts, a graduate of one of North Shore High School’s biggest rivals, Channelview High School, heard of the news, the Pro Bowl quarterback stepped up and paid for the funeral services for the Coles family. Ian Rapoport was first on the news of Hurts’ donation.
It’s a nice gesture from Hurts to try and help the Coles family, but the message that can be sent here is that the petty squabbles of an on-field rivalry will always pale in comparison to the trials and tribulations that people go through in life.
