Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts is not only one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL but he is one of the highest-paid, too. A five-year, $225 contract extension puts him in the top 10 in average annual value.
The Hurts family’s connection to football runs deep. His father was a high school coach. However, Jalen’s brother also has an interesting football tie.
Let’s meet one of Hurts’ biggest supporters, his brother Averion Jr.
Averion Hurts Jr.’s Football Connection
Averion Jr. is the older brother of Jalen, born to Averion Sr. and Pamela Hurts, who also have a daughter, Kynnedy. Aversion Sr. has three kids with Pamela, and he’s made every possible effort to train his boys to carve out a successful football pathway for him.
The family grew up in Channelview, Texas, and Jalen and Averion Jr. played quarterback at Channelview High School. The love for football runs deep in the Hurts men; Averion Sr. used to play football during his younger years at the same high school while completing his diploma and dipped his toes into coaching right after graduating in 1986.
While Jalen has had the best playing career, it was Averion Jr. who played at Channelview first and set Jalen on his path. Averion Jr. decided he wanted to play quarterback, and Jalen “followed in his older brother’s footsteps.”
Speaking to Fox 26 Houston, their Father, Averion Sr. said, “For whatever reason, when Averion (Jr.) started playing, he wanted to be a quarterback. They both grew up as baseball kids, so they had arms that could throw. And so they just went on, and Jalen kind of followed in that mold.”
Averion Sr. also spoke about the impact his wife, Pamela, had on the brothers: “My wife, she’s the reason they’re quarterbacks. Being a bigger guy, you kind of expect that, ‘OK, I’m going to have some linemen,’ and do those things. Well, she’s not a big woman, so she kept them slim. It’s just something that happened to pay off.”
Averion Jr. played his college football as a quarterback at Kilgore Junior College, prior to transferring and playing two years at Texas Southern. He completed 51.1 percent of his throws and notched 1,857 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year.
Starting his coaching career, Averion Jr. worked for Summer Creek High and Humble ISD in Texas, helping to coach the quarterbacks. More recently, however, Averion Jr. announced in June 2023 on his Instagram that he was going to become the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Baytown Lee High School in Houston, Texas.

He shared the message, “I want to thank Summer Creek High School & Humble ISD for giving me the opportunity to serve! There is no better feeling than hearing a kid say, Coach. This profession is truly gratifying one.” Continuing, Averion Jr. said, “I am proud to announce that I have accepted the role as offensive coordinate & head boys track coach at Baytown Lee High School. A place filled with lots of rich history!”

While Jalen was at Alabama, he told “AL.com” in 2017 that his big brother was always ready with his review after Crimson Tide games. Averion Jr. watched Jalen play and often gave him play-by-play; sometimes, when he came home after a game and checked his phone, he could find a ready-to-go comment sheet from his brother.
