Deebo Samuel vs. C.J. Gardner-Johnson Feud Revisited: What the Two Said Leading Into Conference Championship

There will likely be no pregame pleasantries between Deebo Samuel and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Past history points to two men who can't wait to go at it Sunday.

All wasn’t quiet leading into the NFC Championship Game between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers. Trash talk helped crank the volume up.

Deebo Samuel of the 49ers and C.J. Gardner-Johnson of the Lions were the ones who turned up the decibel levels for pregame banter.

Revisiting Feud Between Deebo Samuel and C.J. Gardner-Johnson

Long story short, these two past NFC title winners have beef with one another.

It goes back to last season’s NFC Championship Game when the safety was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. The same Eagles team that rolled 31-7 over Samuel’s 49ers.

Gardner-Johnson was among the Eagles players who ragged on Samuel after he believed the 49ers were still the better team. Their feud eventually stretched into the 2023 season, even with CJGJ on a new team.

The 26-year-old safety called out the 49ers All-Pro in reacting to a scuffle between the Niners and Cleveland Browns on Oct. 15. Gardner-Johnson took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to accuse Samuel of “typical WR behavior” before Trent Williams came in to finish the fight.

Samuel, however, didn’t take long to clap back. He posted this flashback involving Gardner-Johnson from his New Orleans Saints days before referring to him as a “clown.”

Both weren’t through with one another. They took things outside of X.

Both Players Call Each Other Out After October X Exchange

Three days after Samuel and Gardner-Johnson had their back-and-forth on X, Samuel went on “Up and Adams” with Kay Adams to put the Lions defender on blast.

“He just sounds like he’s mad I got a little bag and a lot of money and no one knows who he is,” Samuel told the NFL personality Adams on Oct. 18.

CJGJ, though, fired off a response to Samuel.

“You better hope all that talk you be doing when we see you all, whatever [playoff] round it may be because I can guard you. You can’t run routes. You’re a running back. You’re a running back. I ain’t gonna sit here and play with you, little boy. Just because you got a little bag, people give you a little clout, and then you ain’t nothing, bro.”

Are Things Bound To Get Chippy Sunday? Dan Campbell Weighs In

Does Dan Campbell have a combustible element he has to deal with?

The Lions head coach isn’t just preparing for his first NFC title game appearance with this team. He’s also been asked if there’s any worry that Samuel and Gardner-Johnson’s feud will escalate.

Yet, Campbell sounds optimistic that things won’t get chippy.

“No personal fouls, and that’s all you’ve got to say,” Campbell said Friday to the media. “He’s good. He knows how to toe the line without crossing it.”

Meanwhile, Gardner-Johnson was in a fiery mood in his session with reporters Thursday — except his demeanor was more toward the excitement building up for the NFC title game.

“Intensity levels always go up; it’s the NFL. Guys go in with an intensity level to win every weekend. The only thing that’s changed this weekend is it’s got a title game in front of it. (Expletive) don’t change,” the safety explained Thursday. “You’ve still got to play 60 minutes of football. The only thing that’s changed is, if you win the game, how you celebrate at the end. I think we want to come out on the other side winning.”

Furthermore, Gardner-Johnson may not have been a part of the past Lions teams that were ridiculed and left at the bottom of the NFC North. But he feels the energy from the players who have endured the string of losing seasons to get to this point.

“This group deserves it, and I ain’t talking about me. The guys that’s been here, that went 0-10-1, they deserve it. The guys that got drafted here, they deserve this (expletive),” he said.

But again, fans will be locked in on the first encounter between Samuel and Gardner-Johnson.
