Dallas Cowboys QB Depth Chart: Dak Prescott Is QB1, Cooper Rush Backs Up, Trey Lance Sits at QB3

The Dallas Cowboys have their franchise quarterback, Dak Prescott, for now. The veteran Cooper Rush will back up Prescott once again, with Trey Lance following behind as QB3 on the roster.

One of the biggest focuses of the offseason for the Cowboys is Prescott’s extension. Both parties have yet to come to an agreement, but as it stands, he leads Dallas into 2024. Let’s break down the Cowboys’ QB depth chart.

Who Are the Dallas Cowboys’ Quarterbacks?

The Cowboys have had the same quarterback rotation of QB1 and QB2 since 2018 (excluding 2020), with Prescott starting and Rush as the backup. That continues into 2024, with Lance heading into his second season with the team as QB3.

Here’s a closer look at the three quarterbacks on the Cowboys’ depth chart.

    Dak Prescott

Prescott was selected 135th overall in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In August 2016, he took over for Tony Romo after his injury, and the rest is history.

Prescott has started in 114 games, resulting in a career record of 73-41. He has 2,585 completions at a 67% completion percentage, 29,459 yards, 202 touchdowns, and 74 interceptions. Despite the accolades, Prescott has just a 2-5 postseason record with no Super Bowl appearances.

Last season, Prescott and the Cowboys had another successful regular-season campaign, going 12-5, but it resulted in a Wild Card loss. He started all 17 games, with high expectations heading into the playoffs. Prescott passed for 4,516 yards on a 69.5% completion percentage and an average 36-9 TD-INT ratio.

Now, contract talks are the topic for Prescott, along with his teammates, Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb. In 2021, Prescott signed a four-year deal worth $160,000,000, including a $66,000,000 signing bonus, $126,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $40,000,000.

In 2024, he will earn a base salary of $29,000,000 and a restructure bonus of $5,000,000 while carrying a cap hit of $55,132,647 and a dead cap value of $66,915,000.

Could this be the final season we see Prescott in a Cowboys uniform, or will he become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL with a historic contract close to $300 million?

    Cooper Rush

In 2023, Rush signed a two-year, $5 million contract to stay with the Cowboys, including a $1,250,000 signing bonus, $2,750,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2,500,000.

Rush was an undrafted free agent signing by the Cowboys in 2017. He’s played for them every season except 2020, when he spent the season with the New York Giants.

Rush’s career record was 5-1 when he took over for Prescott due to injury, showcasing the trust that Dallas’ coaching staff has put in him with solid decision-making. Throughout his career, Rush has thrown for 1,619 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 60.6% completion percentage.

    Trey Lance

Lance was acquired by the Cowboys in August 2023 via trade for a 2024 fourth-round pick (Dadrion Taylor-Demerson). The former No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft did not live up to expectations in San Francisco and ran into the head-turning maturation of Brock Purdy.

Lance has only played in eight career games, starting in four of them, and has gone 2-2. He hasn’t played since Week 2 of 2022.
