The New York Giants’ season opener against the Washington Commanders featured several debuts, but one of the most memorable came from rookie running back Cam Skattebo.
A fourth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, the electrifying Arizona State product had fans eager to see him in action. It did not take long for him to show everyone why, with a single play that left the football world stunned and buzzing.
Why Did One Run Make Giants Fans Go Wild for Cam Skattebo?
The Giants entered the offseason desperately needing a spark on offense. After ranking 31st in the PFSN offense+ metric in 2024-25 and struggling against more physical opponents, the team often relied solely on WR Malik Nabers’ individual talent to find success.
The arrival of Skattebo, even as a mid-round rookie, brings a fresh element that could energize the entire unit.
His attitude on the field has already made him a fan favorite. On one play, he broke three tackles and turned a simple checkdown into a six-yard gain. What stood out most was the way he attacked contact head-on, running with a physical and imposing style that immediately captured attention.
One fan wrote on X: “Cam Skattebo is a maniac.”

While most fans loved the intensity, some voiced concerns about his long-term health. With the NFL constantly tweaking rules and protocols to limit head-first collisions and reduce the risk of brain injuries, his aggressive style raised questions.
“CTE gonna love him but good lord,” one fan commented.

In college, leading with the helmet is sometimes flagged as targeting, but the NFL enforces the rule differently and more leniently. Even so, another fan joked that Skattebo could become the first offensive player ever to draw that kind of penalty in the league.

This style of play quickly wins over fans, especially for a franchise like the Giants. The fanbase has dealt with years of mediocrity and recently watched its most explosive player, Saquon Barkley, leave for the rival Philadelphia Eagles, only to win a Super Bowl and be named Offensive Player of the Year away from New York.

When a player puts on the jersey and shows a willingness to play with that level of physicality, it’s only natural for fans to rally behind him. For Skattebo, if he keeps playing this way, winning over Giants fans won’t be a challenge at all.

One fan even joked that Skattebo runs like he “escaped an insane asylum.”
If he begins producing touchdowns, fans will likely start calling for him to be the starter.

Looking ahead, the Giants face one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this year, and we could see plenty of changes in the starting rotation throughout the season.
For now, Tyrone Tracy is listed as the lead back, with Skattebo expected to be used as a dynamic offensive piece in passing situations and specific packages.
