Cam Newton Explains What Really Happened in Iconic GIF

Cam Newton has been an icon for a long time, but everyone remembers his funny sideline GIF. Recently, he explained what really happened.

All the way back to his days in college, Cam Newton was a walking icon. From winning a national championship to being taken first overall to jumping away from a fumble in the Super Bowl, he’s almost as notable as you can get.

He’s been a part of some funny moments too, including his iconic GIF on the New England Patriots’ sideline. He recently came out and explained what really happened on that sideline. What’d he say?

Cam Newton Speaks on Infamous Sideline GIF

“Me and N’Keal [Harry] was on the sideline talking about basketball,” said Newton on the 4th and 1 Podcast. “N’Keal was saying in high school he averaged 40 points, it was something ridiculous.”

Newton was taken first overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, where he spent all but one year of his NFL career. However, he joined the New England Patriots for the 2020 season, when the meme was created.

“First off, he’s foreign … He moved over here and went to Arizona. None of your bloodline is telling me that you’re a hooper,” said Newton. “Not to say that people don’t hoop, it’s not giving me hooper vibes.”

“So when he said that … I said bruuuhh stop lying. Like stop lying bruh,” said Newton. “Who the f*** were you playing in high school and why isn’t this s*** documented. Like come on bruh.”

“So, when he said that s***, that’s the reaction that I got,” said Newton. “I said bruh stop lying, please … You can tell by my reaction that he was lying. There you go.”

In his one year with the Patriots, Newton started 15 games, passing for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns, leading the Patriots to a 7-8 record. He returned to the Panthers in 2021 but hasn’t played since.

Harry, on the other hand, was taken in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Patriots before joining the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings for one season each. He has 64 career receptions for 714 yards and five touchdowns.

In 2020 more specifically, though, Harry had the best year of his career with Newton. He caught 33 passes on 57 targets for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He’s never caught more than 200 yards in any of his other seasons.

The GIF itself originated in Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders, when the Patriots won 36-20. In the game, Newton passed for 162 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Harry caught two passes for 34 yards.
