Brock Purdy’s History in Prime Time

Purdy is set to make his eighth career appearance in prime time on Thursday night as the 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy has had some excellent games on national television, but he’s also had some duds.

His first prime-time outing was on Dec. 15, 2022, when Purdy led San Francisco to a 21-13 victory over the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in just his third career start as a rookie. He threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns in the game as the 49ers built up a 21-3 lead early in the second half and held on from there.

Next up was a Week 3 meeting with the New York Giants. Purdy went 25-of-37 for 310 yards and two touchdowns on the day, leading the 49ers to a comfortable 30-12 victory on Thursday Night Football.

Purdy delivered again two weeks later in a Week 5 drubbing of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. He went 17-of-24 for 254 yards and four touchdowns in the contest as San Francisco rolled to a dominant 42-10 win. This is easily the best prime-time performance of Purdy’s career thus far.

Purdy’s first prime-time blemish came two weeks later, however, when the 49ers took on the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. His numbers were not all bad in going 21-of-30 for a touchdown, but two interceptions proved costly in the 22-7 defeat.

Next up, he faced the Seattle Seahawks in a Thursday-night Thanksgiving showdown, throwing for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Most importantly, San Francisco won the game in convincing fashion, 31-13.

Purdy’s worst prime-time game was a Week 16 clash against the Baltimore Ravens. Not only did the 49ers lose 33-19, Purdy was dreadful, throwing four interceptions and zero touchdowns while completing just 56.2% of his passes. Entering this game, Purdy had just three interceptions across his first five prime-time games, but the Ravens had his number.

In Week 1 of the 2024 season, Purdy led the Niners to a 32-19 victory over the New York Jets. While his numbers don’t jump off the page (19-of-29 for 231 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions), he did just enough to win the game.

Tonight, Purdy will have his next prime-time test against the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football. The Niners have beaten the Seahawks in four straight games, tied for their longest win streak ever vs. Seattle (tying their four-game winning streak from 2010-12). Also, the Seahawks have lost four straight Thursday games, the third-longest active streak behind only the New York Giants (9 straight) and New Orleans Saints (5).

Entering this game, Purdy is averaging a league-high 3.14 seconds to throw, and he’s made a lot of big plays on extended dropbacks. On throws taking three or more seconds, Purdy averages 12.8 yards per attempt and 0.45 EPA per dropback. On throws under three seconds, he’s at 6.3 yards per attempt and -0.07 EPA per dropback.

After facing Seattle, the 49ers have four more prime-time games this season: Week 8 (vs. Dallas Cowboys), Week 13 (at Buffalo Bills), Week 15 (vs. Los Angeles Rams), and Week 17 (vs. Detroit Lions).

All in all, Purdy has a 5-2 record across his seven prime-time starts for San Francisco. He has gone a combined 138-of-240 (57.5%) for 1,746 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
