Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen is halfway through his six-year, $258 million extension, which is not a lot by today’s standards. He takes home around $43 million per year, which has pushed him out of the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks list.
After leading the Bills to five consecutive playoff spots, Allen falls behind quarterbacks like the Green Bay Packers’ Jordan Love in AAV (average annual value), who earns $55 million per year. The Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa signed a deal worth $53.1 million per year. Trevor Lawrence signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars for $55 million/year.
How is Allen dealing with his accomplished résumé vs. being the 13th-highest-paid QB in AAV?
When Is Josh Allen’s Contract Up?
Allen’s contract runs through the 2028 season. It would be mildly shocking for an extension to wait that long, but the NFL is a funny beast.
The Wyoming alum is one of the most productive and successful QBs in the modern NFL. In the last four seasons, he has passed for at least 4,000 yards and easily scored 30 touchdowns.
He recently addressed the current conversation around QB salaries while also talking about his compensation in an interview with News 4 Buffalo.
Josh Allen was asked if he feels underpaid.
His contract ranks 13th among QBs in average value & 11th in total guarantees.
But his answer was insightful.

Although many believe Allen is not getting paid according to his abilities, the Bills quarterback seems content with his contract. He said everybody is going to have their day, and he’s happy with what other players in the league are getting.
Allen humbly stated that it was his time a couple of years ago, and maybe it’ll come again, but his priority currently is to keep “the main thing the main thing” and focus on getting better as a player and playing football to the best of his capabilities.
He also said that “a market’s a market,” and you get paid more as you progress as a player. He reaffirmed that he likes his financial spot and is in no rush to get another, more lucrative contract.
Will Josh Allen Play in the Final Preseason Game vs. the Panthers?
While the original plan was to play the starters in the last preseason game against the Panthers, various injuries changed head coach Sean McDermott’s mind.
Some of the injured Bills include backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and tight end Quintin Morris.
Hence, the Bills’ starting quarterback will now rest through the Week 3 matchup along with the rest of the key players to avoid any more injuries heading into the regular season in September.
While the others sit this game out, McDermott will give the other guys a chance to showcase their abilities and “get a good look” at them, which will help build a strong roster ahead of the season.
