‘I Wanted To Stay in Tennessee’ — Eagles Star A.J. Brown Candidly Revisits Controversial Titans Trade That Made Him ‘Mad’

The Philadelphia Eagles ended their season winning Super Bowl 59, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. One of their star players, A.J. Brown, scored what ended up being the game-winning touchdown late in the first half to put the Eagles up 24-0.

Brown was traded to Philadelphia in 2022 by the Tennessee Titans, the team that drafted him 51st overall in 2019. He recently joined “Million Dollaz Worth Of Game” and spoke about the day that changed his career.

A.J. Brown Opens Up About Controversial Trade From Tennessee

Brown has been on fire since arriving in Philadelphia, making the Pro Bowl twice and being named to the second-team All-Pro list in all three seasons. He eclipsed 1,400 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023 and added another 1,079 in just 13 regular season games last season. The six-year vet has 28 total touchdowns in his first three seasons as an Eagle (including playoffs) and doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

He recently went on the Barstool Sports podcast “Million Dollaz Worth Of Game” and discussed his thoughts on the day of the trade.

“That was a long day,” Brown said when asked what was going through his mind when he got the call. “I didn’t really want to leave at the time. I wanted to stay in Tennessee. Tennessee was home. Mom, sister was there, it just made sense.”

Brown spent his first three seasons as a Titan, putting up 1,000+ yards and 20 total touchdowns in 2019 and 2020. A chest injury limited him to 13 games in 2021 when he posted 63 receptions, 869 yards, and five scores.

“I didn’t really want to leave, but I got the call and got mad cause the Titans were about to ship me off,” Brown said. “I was excited to play with Jalen [Hurts], so I just went and worked out, got it off my chest a little bit. Then, later that night everything unfolded cause we had to beat the draft for the trade. So we had to get the contract worked out.”

Things got weird in Tennessee when the 2022 NFL Draft came around. Brown was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was looking for an extension. The Titans didn’t make him a serious offer (somewhere between $16-20 million a year) and decided to trade Brown to the Eagles for Philadelphia’s first- and third-round picks that year.

“Shoot, after I was mad for a minute, I was happy as hell,” Brown said.

The Eagles promptly gave Brown a four-year, $100 million contract and have become one of the best teams in the league over the last three seasons; meanwhile, the Titans earned the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a 3-14 record. You be the judge of who won the trade.
