When Aaron Rodgers went on a “darkness retreat,” many around the sports world immediately had questions. Rodgers used the time to clear his head and decide the next step in his NFL career.
Not everyone is a future Hall of Fame QB, but the opportunity for a darkness retreat is available for many, so let’s dive into all the details.
What Is a Darkness Retreat? Everything You Need To Know
Rodgers provided a glimpse into what a darkness retreat entailed. Isolation is a component of the retreat, shutting yourself from the outside world and devices that distract your attention. No phones, no email, no computers, no television.
The darkness portion is critical. Shutting yourself away from the light in a dark area, pitch black. Rodgers spent time in a cabin specifically designed for a retreat. He credits this time as moments of meditation, self-reflection, and self-love.

During the time spent in darkness, individuals tend to find peace. A calmness comes over the individual while distancing themselves from our daily distractions. Some take this to relax, reset, and explore their consciousness.
The time spent in the darkness reminds people of what is truly important in life and the things that have no real significance. Love and peace receive priority over money and fame.

Many homes or huts for darkness retreats remind movie fans of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” films as the homes resemble caves. Many of the homes contain a carpeted area for meditation and yoga, a table for eating, and a bath, sink, and toilet.
There is a way out of the home, and participants may leave anytime. The doors remain unlocked, and there is a light switch for emergency use. Organizers provide participants with time to speak. Depending on the individual, that time ranges from 10 seconds to 30 minutes.
The cost per night is roughly $250, including three delivered meals. Participants spend approximately 3-4 days during their retreat but are encouraged to spend a day before or after to acclimate themselves to it.
Although a retreat is beneficial to finding one’s center, it should not be viewed as a cure-all or quick fix. The retreats benefit those looking for inner peace, but as with anything, they are not for everyone.
There is little research on the physical impact darkness retreats have on the human body and mind, as studies are ongoing.
