Throughout the Stanley Cup Finals, both Skinner and Calvin Pickard struggled with lateral movement, allowing Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart, and other Panthers forwards to exploit their weaknesses repeatedly. The reality of returning with the same goaltending tandem prompted another pointed response. “Y’all running it back with Skinner and Pickard, huh?” a fan questioned.

Not all reactions focused solely on positional needs. Some fans evaluated Lafreniere’s performance with Kamloops, where he posted 24 goals and 56 points in 68 games. However, his minus-33 rating raised concerns. “Plus/minus is not great for the kid (-33 in 68gp last year). Turnovers are what he needs to improve on. Has offensive upside,” one observer noted. Others suggested the Oilers should have selected Adam Benak instead.

True, any goalie drafted won’t be of any help right now, same reason Skinner won’t work for the Oilers. But you definitely don’t pick up a goaltender at the deadline and expect any kind of success that year. A goaltender (especially) needs time to get used to teammates and systems. You need your goaltender well in advance of the deadline. Talk about stupid…
Being an Oilers fan literally since their entry into the NHL, this fanbase has some of the dumbest people.
1. How is drafting a goaltender that you probably won’t see for 5 years do anything to help this team right now? You don’t draft for need when you’re needs might be different when the player finally arrives in the NHL.
2. The playoffs don’t start in October. You’d think some people would learn that making desperate moves carries high risk. How soon they’ve forgotten Jack Campbell.
3. Skinner/ Pickard is plenty good enough to get to the deadline.
We want to make a move for an ACTUAL upgrade in net, not a sideways move that could turn out worse.
Lafrenieres plus/minus and his constant turn overs are exactly what Oilers go for. Great, another Nurse.
