Ohio State is entering the season with a fully loaded roster and sky-high expectations. Caleb Downs returns as the anchor of a defense that ranked among the best in college football last year. The defending champion Buckeyes have top-tier talent on both sides of the ball and are widely considered national championship contenders this season.
With the arrival of longtime NFL coach Matt Patricia as the new defensive coordinator, the program adds something special to its staff. But not everyone is convinced the move will pay off.
JD PicKell Voices Doubt Over Ohio State DC Matt Patricia’s Transition to College Game
Analyst JD PicKell offered a pointed take on Ohio State’s new hire.
“I have my reservations around Matt Patricia and how that’ll work at the college football level,” PicKell said on a recent episode of the “Crain & Company Podcast.”
While he gave credit to the team’s talent, PicKell openly questioned whether Patricia’s background in the NFL would mesh with the unique demands of college football.
Patricia will now be responsible for calling plays and leading a unit expected to dominate. The Buckeyes are not rebuilding; they are reloading with experience and five-star athletes across the field.
Still, PicKell suggested that pedigree alone does not guarantee success in a different environment. He didn’t attack Patricia’s resume but cast doubt on his ability to adapt to the tempo and unpredictability of college offenses.
The biggest safety net for Patricia may be the presence of Caleb Downs. The former Alabama standout is seen as one of the best safeties in the nation. PicKell highlighted Downs as the kind of player who can erase mistakes and lead from the back end.
“It’s wide-out for whatever problems you might have on defense,” he said, implying that Downs gives the team flexibility while Patricia settles in.

Ohio State’s defense under Jim Knowles saw massive improvement last season. With Patricia now stepping into a play-calling role, many fans expect even greater results.
However, PicKell’s comments reflect a broader concern about how NFL systems and coaching styles translate to college locker rooms. Players are younger, preparation windows are shorter, and the pace of play is often faster.
PicKell tied Patricia’s adjustment directly to Ohio State’s championship window. If the defense holds and Patricia adapts, the Buckeyes are legitimate title threats. If not, the hire could become a talking point in a season where margins for error are razor-thin.
Either way, all eyes will be on Columbus this fall, and especially on the man now running the defense.
