The world’s top tennis stars are ready to take the spotlight on Monday, June 30, as the 138th edition of Wimbledon kicks off at the iconic All England Lawn Tennis Club. While fans can expect thrilling battles and unforgettable moments on the grass courts, Wimbledon is never just about the tennis. It often brings its fair share of drama and headlines, too.
Last year’s edition had some fine tennis matches but it also had its fair share of controversies, which made the tournament memorable in its own right. On that note, let us take a look at the top five controversial moments from Wimbledon 2024.
#1. Novak Djokovic’s War of Words With the Centre Court Crowd
Known for his intense on-court demeanor and unfiltered passion, Djokovic has often found himself at odds with the crowd. One of the most striking examples of this dynamic played out during his fiery fourth-round clash against Holger Rune at Wimbledon 2024.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion beat the Norwegian 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 but he was targeted by the crowd’s reactions throughout the contest. Djokovic believed they were booing him rather than chanting Rune’s name and didn’t hold back in his post-match comments.
“To all the fans that have respect and that stayed here tonight: Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate it. And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case, me, have a goooood night. goooood night. Very good night,” said Djokovic.
He further added, “You guys can’t touch me. The Serb went on to reach the final of the grass-court Major before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
#2. Judy Murray’s Reaction to Emma Raducanu’s Mixed Doubles Withdrawal
Andy Murray withdrew from the men’s singles event at Wimbledon 2024 to focus on the doubles events, partnering with his brother Jamie in what was expected to be a special farewell appearance. Unfortunately, their run was cut short after a first-round exit.
The three-time Grand Slam champion had also planned to play mixed doubles alongside fellow Brit, Emma Raducanu, announcing it would be the last dance of his Wimbledon career. However, that planned send-off never happened because Raducanu withdrew from the match due to injury concerns, officially bringing Murray’s Wimbledon journey to an unexpected end.
The decision naturally sparked backlash, with many expressing frustration over the missed opportunity. And the most prominent critic was none other than Murray’s mother, Judy Murray, who reacted on social media by replying to a post calling Raducanu’s withdrawal “astonishing” with a two-word response: “Yes, astonishing.”

After receiving a wave of backlash, Judy Murray later stated:
“Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days. Pretty sure the scheduling… will have played a major part in any decision-making.”
Raducanu later addressed the issue and said, “Afterwards I sent him [Andy Murray] a long message basically apologising if I caused any trouble, I guess, at Wimbledon, that’s definitely the last thing I want.”
“He’s someone that I’ve grown up looking up to, and I don’t want any bad blood or harsh feelings with him. I sent him a long message, and he took it really well and responded, saying he was disappointed but he understood,” she added.
#3. Daniil Medvedev Loses His Cool in an Ugly Argument With the Umpire
Tensions flared during last year’s Wimbledon semifinal between Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz. The 2021 US Open champion started strong and was in control early. While serving for the opening set, he faced a breakpoint at 30-40 when the Spaniard hit a delicate drop shot.
Medvedev rushed forward and believed he reached the ball before it bounced twice. However, the chair umpire disagreed and awarded the point and the crucial break to Alcaraz. Furious with the decision and the lost opportunity to close out the set, Medvedev shouted an expletive at the umpire, yelling, “F**k you” in a moment of frustration.

The umpire, upset by the outburst, paused the match to consult with tournament supervisors. After a few minutes, officials chose not to default Medvedev but instead issued him a formal warning.
Medvedev was able to win the first set, but the momentum shifted. The Spaniard regrouped and stormed back to win 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
#4. Taylor Fritz’s Girlfriend Morgan Riddle’s Supposed Dig at Alexander Zverev on Social Media
Taylor Fritz edged out Alexander Zverev in a gripping five-set battle in the fourth round at Wimbledon 2024, but the tension didn’t stop once the match ended. As the two met at the net for the post-match handshake, they were seen engaging in an extended, heated exchange, sparking speculation about what was said.
In his post-match press conference, Zverev addressed the interaction and clarified that his issue wasn’t with Fritz himself, but with certain members of his player box.
“His (Fritz’s) team is extremely respectful. I think his coach, his physio, also his second coach, they’re extremely respectful,” the German said.
He added, “I think there’s some other people that maybe are in the box that are not maybe from the tennis world, that are not maybe from particularly watching every single match. They were a bit over the top.”
Many interpreted his comments as a reference to Fritz’s girlfriend, Morgan Riddle. Not long after the match, Riddle shared a photo from the stands with the caption: “Cheer loud ladies.”

The post drew significant backlash, as some perceived it as a subtle jab at Zverev, who has faced allegations of physical abuse from a former partner. In response to the criticism, Riddle deleted the post and clarified that it had been misunderstood.
#5. Andrey Rublev’s Frustration Takes a Violent Turn With the Racket
Andrey Rublev has often had on-court outbursts and he found himself in the spotlight during his first-round defeat to Francisco Comesana at Wimbledon 2024. In the fourth set, the Russian became agitated and smashed his racket seven times, first against his knee and then against his head in a moment of anger.
When asked about his reaction after the match, Rublev explained his actions were a result of wanting to release his emotions while still following the rules.
“I would not do it if I was able to hit the racket on the floor because we’re not allowed to hit them with the grass,” Rublev said.
